It would be easy for me to link pictures of shithole places in the U.S. like LA, NY and SF and abroad but most people already know those are more shitholes than the pic on your link which is a river community devastated by a cat 4 hurricane.

I've been to Puerto Rico once for 5 months in 2015 and have been to all the major Hawaiian islands, the dominican republic, Cancun/playa del carmen, and a few of the virgin islands and none of them are like Puerto Rico. Trash lines the street, beaches are filled with plastic and trash, mangrove shorelines are literally clogged with trash in the roots. Get out of any "tourist" area and it's piles of trash/mattresses around every house almost all of which are completed surrounded by 10' tall iron bar fences due to their crime. Go get gas or to any convenient store outside the tourist zone and you have to talk through a glass circle.

Most of the cars are broken down and not road worthy, you will see some of the most rediculous shit on the roads there. You will see people with broken windows garbage bagged up all around the car with cutouts so they can just see enough to drive. You will see cars with wheels literally about to fall off wobbling on the roads you will see people going 80 on the grass median passing you on the highway. There are rabid dogs everywhere on the island and there are probably more wild dogs then people if you stay there for a few weeks you will see the rabid dogs commit suicide as they foam at the mouth and walk into the highways and wait for a car to hit them its an every day thing. There is actually a beach called Dead dog beach (no joke) and you will regularly find dead dogs rotting on it.

The streets are filled with advertisements, billboards crowd every flat surface with not just one ad but 5-20 different ads same with stores there are so many ads that you have trouble knowing what the hell the store or building behind it even is and a large percentage of the ads are for welfare or for voting for some politician who is offering more welfare.

You talk to the people there and their main goal in life is to work as little as possible and collect as much welfare as possible. This is not an exaggeration, we went there because my wife has family that lives there so we spent a good amount of time and my god I have never in my life experianced such a lazy population with no motivation. Even the college kids there mostly only had aspirations of finding a do nothing job that still lets them collect welfare or leaving the island to go to the states.

For all the tropical islands I've been to Puerto Rico was just depressing. It is a beautiful island which has been absolutely ruined by its people and it is really just a giant dumpster with a few manicured areas for the tourists. Leave the tourist zones and it is the dirtiest POS area. Every grocery store looks like it's covered in an inch of sticky gunk, all their meat products have pork added. Their restaurants are about as clean as the most disgusting restaurant you can find in your local ghetto.

With that said, the west side of the island is more rural and you can escape the masses of welfare do nothing lazy garbage dispensing leaches. I don't see how the united states made them this way.. they siphon billions from us each year and they pay $0 federal taxes. there is no reason we need them as a territory anymore. We have aircraft carriers these days the island is obsolete to our defenses
