Ebola confirmed in a city of more than 1 million in Congo

Congo’s Ebola outbreak has spread to the capital of northwestern Equateur province. The country’s health minister says two suspected cases of hemorrhagic fever were reported in the Wangata health zones, which includes Mbandaka, a city of nearly 1.2 million people. One sample proved positive for the Ebola virus. Mbandaka is about 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Bikoro, the rural area where the outbreak was announced last week.

Congo Health Minister Oly Ilunga says he is worried because Mbandaka is densely populated and at the crossroads of Equateur province. The city lies on the Congo River, a crucial travel hub in the vast country where infrastructure is largely poor. Downstream is Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, with a population of roughly 10 million.

DRC Ebola cases top 1,800 amid burial team attacks



Blowing past the 1,800 case mark, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported 39 cases over the weekend as well as a pair of assaults on burial teams, along with 10 new infections today, according to the latest official reports, raising the outbreak's total to 1,826.

There are a lot of nasty diseases resurfacing at the same time as this Ebola Crisis.

The creepiest next to Ebola is the evil fungal monster known as Candida auris is already global and has a very high mortality rate and no proper treatment.

We've seen a resurgence of other nasty diseases like the Bubonic Plague or Black Death in Mongolia.

Tuberculosis is becoming more rampant and harder to treat.

Scarlet Fever has resurfaced.

More and more bacteria are becoming immune to last-resort anti-biotics and all of this happening in this decade.

Let's not forget the Polio vaccine Gates rolled out which seemed to kill more than it treated.

All of these are really damning signs of what is to come and what has already come.

There is a lot of scary shit brewing in the shadows of our world making the idea of a massive multi-front multi-agent pandemic more worrisome.

WHO: Ebola Strategies Need Adjusting in Congo


GENEVA —
A panel of World Health Organization experts says strategies must be strengthened to combat the worsening Ebola epidemic in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The WHO's latest report counted 1,738 cases of Ebola in Congo, including 1,218 deaths.

Congo's minister of health, Oly Ilungo, likened the Ebola epidemic to a multi-headed dragon. Speaking through an interpreter, he said the epidemic began in one place, Mangina, but keeps popping up elsewhere.

"Our response, therefore, needs to continually adapt itself to the situation," said Ilungo. "We need to continually adapt and change our strategy bearing in mind lessons learned."

He said prevention measures, surveillance, the tracing of infected people, timely treatment and safe burial practices must be maintained. At the same time, he said old tools need to be refreshed and improved.

He proposed setting up a data-driven system, which compiles all the information produced in the response effort.

"Increasingly, it manages to carry out analyses that allow us to get ahead of the problem and we can identify the danger areas where there might be a greater risk of the virus spreading and we can get ahead of the problem," he added.

Facebook this morning (yesterday) announced a new initiative focused on using its data and technologies to help nonprofit organizations and universities working in public health better map the spread of infectious diseases around the world. Specifically, the company is introducing three new maps: population density maps with demographic estimates, movement maps and network coverage maps. These, says Facebook, will help the health partners to understand where people live, how they’re moving and if they have connectivity — all factors that can aid in determining how to respond to outbreaks, and where supplies should be delivered.
