The explosions you saw are pyrotechnic deployed emergency floats around the skids. Looks like the pilot hit the button just in time.

I saw a helicopter crash about 30 feet from me in 2005. The jack ass pilot was taking off from a pier in st Thomas and dipped the nose of the copter too soon and the blade hit the concrete. The helicopter instantly flipped over into the water and sank.

The dude had his 5 year old son with him too. After half a minute he surfaced with his kid.

As I stood there filming ,the pieces of blade exploded and whizzed by me. The dude had just gotten his pilots. But besides that he was Puerto Rican who are the worst drivers on earth next to their close cousins the blacks.
