the main expedion lost its commander when they landed
he had blood in his lungs and could not breathe
and then they had a storm of dust and lost the nuclear reactor
then thye had to rationalize energy and they also lost the food thing

then they had an explosion and lost 7 people from the replacement
bear in mind that each replacement team comes every 2 years when Earth and Mars are close-only 300 million km between them
it takes 7 month to get there
those pritimive rockets are aimed where Mars shoul be

whcih leads me to the logical conclusion that they have something way more advanced like in star trek and stargate for tyaking people offworld
