Saturday's mass shooting rivaled the 17 people struck by gunfire at last year's Art All Night festival.

At-large councilman Jerell Blakeley took to Facebook to lament the city's spike in violence.

"Just waking to text messages of the mass shooting on Brunswick Avenue," he wrote. "This kind of carnage shouldn’t normal but is becoming a common occurrence. Every time the weather breaks, the madness descends in this city. I am calling for bringing in the troopers and National Guard to the City. I’m sick and tired of this city not being able to enjoy a nice spring day without the prospect of absolute mayhem and carnage committed by a dissolute and wicked few. They must be stopped."

Blakeley said in a phone interview Saturday morning that police need to crack down on the "reckless clowns who reign mayhem on the people of the city of Trenton. This cannot be the new normal. This is another mass shooting that there must be a comprehensive response to. If something isn’t done, I wouldn’t recommend anyone go out in Trenton.”

The mass shooting occurred three days after 18-year-old Taquan Ellerbe, the grandson of mayoral aide Andrew Bobbitt, was fatally shot on the first block of Bellevue Avenue.

Ellerbe's slaying was Trenton's fifth homicide of the year, and the fourth involving a Trenton resident this month.

Willie West, 69, of Ewing, was shot in the stomach with a sawed-off shotgun on the first block of Hart Avenue May 19. He was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

Maurice Rowe, 30, of Trenton, was shot to death May 7, near Oakland and Hoffman avenues.

The brazen shooting was interrupted by Trenton Police street crime detectives Stephen Szbanz and John Carrigg who were responding to an unrelated call on Hoffman Avenue when they heard gunshots, prosecutors said.

Rowe was killed five days after 40-year-old Javier Morales was gunned down, with his back turned, near Hudson and Pearl streets.

Trenton musician Jamar Tucker was also murdered this month when he was found shot to death in Langhorne on his birthday, May 10.

In neighboring Hamilton Township, Leydi Lemos-Delgado, 32, of Hamilton, was stabbed to death in her Hamilton home on Mother's Day. Helder Rosa, of Lamberton Street in Trenton, was charged with her murder.

Blakeley said there's a "cohort of murderous animals" who don't "give a damn" about city residents and they "must be stopped."
