The whole situation is ironic, really, in that Iran, at one time, had the most successful democracy in the entire middle east (until the USA destroyed it.) Fully civilized, female doctors, women driving cars, etc. The pictures of the era look idyllic.
BUT, the Iranians, democracy though they may have been, refused to kowtow to the Americans. So America replaced the democracy. With Islamists.

This is what I meant by "civilized" -- laws and guaranteed freedoms, versus iron rule by a shah. Is this incorrect?
