Re: Which war movie was the most accurate!?
Platoon was based on Oliver Stone's personal experience in Nam.

They filmed it as if the actors were there. They made em go out on patrol, when a character died on camera... that actor was immediately taken off set and flown back to America... go goodbyes or anything.

At one point the cast were so conditioned that they though the VC was attacking them. The crew would launch flares at them... even when the cameras were not rolling... It was an psychological experiment on them.

There was even real life hatred developing between Sheen and Berenger that took years to resolve peacefully.

It wasn't your typical lush Hollywood set... those actors lived the way our soldiers did in Nam.

The filming got delayed for sometime. The day the actors arrived in Cambodia a civil war broke out. They were trapped in their Hotel room... They were supposed to move to the set the next day but couldn't due to tanks in the street and the fighting... really set the tone for them.

Until the get the smell of puke, blood, and piss on the battle field into the theater along with crying dying men calling "Mama" plaintively like a hurt child none of them are accurate. You don't know war 'till you've been in one.

Any ideas?

There was an Australian movie called The Odd Angry Shot, made back in the late 1970's. The patrolling scenes in that film are pretty accurate.

"The Hurt Locker", was extremely accurate. In my 3 deployments, Desert Storm, Haiti and Bosnia, the scenario's were pretty much the same, just remove the EOD and add Normal Patrol scenario's.

Das Boot as mentioned is very detailed in its recreations of sub warfare.

Paths of Glory stands out as a great war film.

Honorable mentions, not previously mentioned.
