I think a lot of people assume they're safe at an all inclusive 5 star resort

We stopped going to Mexico or Belize which we absolutely love about five years ago. These people through personal experience do not like gringos, especially Americans. They like your tourist money and that’s about it.

I thought only in muslim countries would a woman be beaten or raped if out alone.

Vacation is a dangerous place.

Tourists end up being targets for everything from theft to scams to misdirected anger to organ "donation" to worse. Half the time, the police are in on it.

I live on vacation, but I grew up in the middle of one of the bigger cartels on earth. To me, the tourist life isn't so bad. Most of my life was like your worst "it happened on vacation" nightmare scenario. I can manage pretty much anything.

But, it's definitely not something you want to be drunk and dumb for, which is unfortunately what most people do on vacation.
