DR is sketchy as f*ck! I worked an install at a new resort for 16 days. My local crew were good guys but the whole area (Punta Cana), is a cesspool.

The cities have lots of crime and poverty in DR.

Some of the staff at these resorts in Punta Cana come over from Haiti to work there. Gee, what could possibly go wrong?

There have also been many sex assaults at the resorts in Jamaica. Don't go!

And that is the 'good' part of Hispanola.

Don't leave the cruise ship unless you are at a company owned private island in the middle of no where or an extremely well known tourist spot. Even then never wonder off.

Had a friend go down, asked him how was his trip, he wasnt thrilled with the vacation. Wasnt specific as to what he experienced but when asked if he would go back he said not really. He said their food sucked, the resort was ok, seemed really lackluster. He is an black man, and even he wasnt super cozy with the place. My older sis wanted us to go, but she changed the trip after researching the hell out of the place, we ended up in Whistler instead which was fucking amazing.

Lets be honest the entire Caribbean is a total shit show. I had a safe vibe from the Caymens we even stayed with a rental car during my childhood in the 1980s in a downtown hotel dad said it was no problem the whole time then but that was the 80s. However my recent trip to Jamacia, Bahammas, gave me the impression is its all an illusion just a predatory illusion, good folks do live their but all in all you are a stranger to be preyed upon by some form or another ranging from mild hustling to threats and breaches into personal space with mild to moderate hostile intent. The safety relevancy ratio or percentage is lower than my median number.

A lot of these crimes are committed by hotel employees and security staff and also occur in countries considered safe for Americans. Several months ago a Florida woman was savagely killed in Costa Rica at a luxury Airbnb resort by a security guard. She went there to celebrate her 36th birthday. Her family is suing the resort.

When a crime occurs these hotels usually don't call the police. They pretend nothing happened to avoid bad publicity. Even if they do call the police sometimes they don't show up until a week later and do nothing. So you're basically on your own when you travel to these place. Nobody will protect you.

Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are both on the US government travel advisory list as Level 2 warnings ("increased caution"), although oddly enough Costa Rica is designated as safe at Level 1.

There are four levels with Level 4 being the most dangerous ("do not travel").

Paying to stay in shitholes & being surrounded by 3rd world predators. I laugh when people are excited to stay in all inclusive shithole resorts because they can drink for days. Exactly what predators enjoy, drunk morons.

Foreign travel is dangerous period.

If you want a relaxing vacation stick to the US and Canada and pick a high quality place where you know you're taken care of and protected. Worth the extra money.

Went to DR on vacation last year. Pretty crappy experience— the airport was terrible and unloaded luggage and left it sitting in part of the airport where nobody knew where it was, and couldn’t find it.

We were staying at a decent resort, but, Atlantic side and it was very windy and somewhat cooler. Service was markedly worse than resorts in Mexico. Beach was terrible.

Definitely won’t be back.

Stick to the British carribean Islands, they are safe and friendly. British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Antigua, Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, the Queen is still head of state.

The ones that ditched the Queen and the UK turned into shit holes instantly, Jamaica, Barbados, all no go areas outside the hotel. Troops in the street to stop the negros murdering the tourists who feed them types of places.

DR is deadly even for the best/most experienced of world travelers.

I have stayed at this hotel for 3 weeks, its all inclusive 24/7 all you can eat and drink. It was amazing and felt very safe in DR 10 years ago. They even have a casino.

Want a beach resort and hotel with fancy drinks and pretty waitresses? How about anywhere in the US. Marco Island Florida, Tampa, Ft Lauderdale, San Diego, Long Island, North and South Carolina...you name it...we've got it. I grew up in the Rhode Island beach area. Plenty of night life along the beaches. Why go to shit hole countries with violent nogs just waiting for you to get drunk and walk away alone. When I went to the Philippines there was no police there either. It can be very dangerous. I was pick pocketed several times by rat fink kids. Stay in the USA...

Spent a week there Puerto Plata on the North shore. Still have some of their local currencies. Remember the bank had an armed guard standing at the entrance with a carbine. Hookers all over the place. Cigarettes prices reasonable. Been there done that. Lots of European tourists.
