Sounds Christian. Nobility defended their reputation with duels, and knighthoods have only been given out for doing things like curing cancer for the past century or so. But for all that, I don't think the violence has quite been taken off the table.

If a person is kept sick and poor, then they aren't going to have very lofty aspirations, and they aren't going to have a rosy picture of their fellow man or any illusions about him being bettered. And I can't seem to shake that the bulk of the expectation of self-sacrifice still falls on them. But that's just me.
