Cairo Il,has a wall around it like in king kong or something with giant gates. It's a mix of ghetto and low income whites who hate each other. The wall is for floods but gives the whole town a post apocalypse vibe.Supposedly Egyptian relics and glyphs in the area.

Stayed the night there once. Ghetto as fuck. Bullet hole through the window and the door didn't lock right. Had to prop a chair against the doorknob. But YOLO.

Yep. I grew up in the coal mining towns of WV. Very backward people all over. There are a few towns up there that are still very backwoods and possible reports of some inbreeding still to this day. One of the worst I’ve been to is called Odd WV. That’s literally the name of the town. Google it, there are a few moves.

Some green would be appreciated too...
 Quoting: wakemanlm

My grandmother was from Clarksburg, WV and she left us some land in Marion County. We went out to see it and passed a mailbox with the name Gump on the side, then the road ended and dropped off right before our land. A woman in a muu muu with mustard all over her face came out told us how our land used to belong to her family and wanted to buy it. We had heard from several local people who all wanted to buy it and all warned us about everybody else trying to buy the land. We were getting a local feud vibe. And I'm telling the truth about Gump. My husband commented on it and Mrs. Gump had no idea what he was talking about and this is in 1999.

Re: Anyone here have any creepy "small town in the middle of nowhere" travel stories???
Bullhead City in Arizona should be MOVED to the middle of nowhere, so that only those specially doomed by the gods end up there. What a hell hole. Words don't communicate this Gateway To Hell, where the dirty rotten cops compete with the dirty rotten people for hell's honors. It would take a book, or at at least a Great Wall Of Text, to tell much more of the story, but here's a mini-page ---

So I moved to Mohave County where that craphole is located, and start a business. My prime employee, it turned out, had received an insurance payout for his wife's death in a car wreck, a total of $1 million. He blew it ALL on drugs over a few years, then went to Vegas to rent a car, which he parted out for cash here, getting busted (now how could that possibly happen?). I got the contract for work at the Coca Cola bottling plant in nearby Kingman, and he blew the deal with drugs. Other such things happened. One guy burglarised my home, another guy I hired got murdered. I actually met the guy who was behind that, another colourful chapter in the story. He came knocking on my back door at 11:30 one night, uninvited, to tell me that the Good Old Boys didn't want people coming in from outside the area and providing work for the homeless there, which is what I was doing in some cases.

I took on a business partner who had a car shop. Seemed like a good idea for reasons we discussed about business directions. I later found out that he got the business license for the City's $50 fee - in the name of his 18 y/o heroin-addicted girlfriend. He was 44 y/o and they'd been hooked up for several years. He had no choice since he had done six years in prison and couldn't get a business license. His shop was located two blocks from the cop shop, right under their cameras, and he had gfuys with tats coming and going til 3 A.M. at his shop. His girlfriend got busted 300 feet from the police station at 3 A.M. one night with heroin, the cops raided his shop and shut it down.

After this, my residence was strangely broken into on several occasions - cash was untouched but my computer, papers, and other "strategic" things either tampered with or stolen. No drug addict does this.

I wrote a letter to the local newspaper about all this, the next day my car with an electronic key which only I possessed on my person, was stolen. Later, while sitting on a folding chair not far from home at a community center, police came up on me and assaulted me. A state lawyer referral service said that until I came up with several tens of thousands of dollars, I could essentially go pound sand.

If you happen to find yourself driving up on this place, I urge you in the strongest possible terms to pull over momentarily at the outskirts, relive yourself or spit or whatever it is that you do when expressing strong opinions that you do not want misunderstood, then turn around and go back where you came from. God will reward you for your wisdom.

Oniontown, NY, although I have never been there. It is advised not to go in.

That's the weirdest. Trying to visit it by Google Street View only shows an almost black view.

oh, it is dark alright - some kids decided to go through there and video with a cell phone. It became national then, many others tried to do the same. Most of the videos have been scrubbed.

Some teens where attacked when they went and this is what the police have to say:

State police investigator Eric Schaefer said it wasn't the first time out-of-towners were attacked by local residents. "My advice is simple," said the investigator, "If you're not a resident of Oniontown, stay away."

I'm only about an hour and a half away from there. .. Where is it specifically? What road or.roads?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77379038

I beleive it is off of Rte 22 near Dover. I am not sure of the exact location or which road directly leads you into the abyss.....there are probably alot of no trespassing signs around, I would imagine. Besides travelling to VT on occassion, the farthest north I have been on 22 is Daryl's House (Towne Crier Cafe)

This was probably late 90's or early 2000's I was traveling for work and took a wrong turn and ended up in Noxapater MS. I think I was the only white person in the town and I only stopped at a service station to look at my map to figure out how to get the hell out of there. But I got the go to hell look from all the locals and was glad to be on my way as soon as possible.

I know that area well. You would have been fine there. A lot of “strangers” pass through there on their way to the casino about 20 miles down the road.

Lived in a remote location one time. Sixty miles from the closest town. Twenty miles from the highway. Nothing but old half-blown down buildings from the gold mining days out there....and our tiny community of houses way out in the middle of it.

There was a trailer next door that I was told was abandoned.

The first night I moved in, my security light on that side of my house got smashed.

Then my chickens started going missing.

One day we got up the nerve to go over there. Peeked in the window.

There was a man in there who looked so decomposed that he could have played a zombie in a high definition movie and been completely believable. But he was still breathing, and looking right at us.

I never slept right again.

I was driving back to MI from Washington State in the fall of 1993. I was making my way thru rural WI on side roads for some unknown reason and all of a sudden it got late and I was exhausted. Came upon this small town....could not have been more than 10K people. Started looking around for a place to park my truck & sleep for a few hours so I was driving around just looking for a quiet out of the way place like a city park or something. Evidently, what I was doing was looked at as suspicious because suddenly I was pulled over by like their entire freaking police force. They freaked out like you would not believe. If I hadn't been so scared of being thrown in jail I would have laughed. The fuckers ran me out of town! I went back to the freeway, finally found a rest stop and pulled off & slept. Those cops were a gang of assholes. I was a young, clean cut white kid driving a small truck. No tattoos. No hot rod. Just a tired kid and they ran me off so fast. Assholes...

Re: Anyone here have any creepy "small town in the middle of nowhere" travel stories???
In 1993 I was attending college in upstate New York. We lived in a broken down house off campus and late one night one of my 6 housemates asked me to drive his girl home.

She lived about 8 miles from our house and me being the only one with a working car, was happy to do it. Not really though, we were really stoned after playing Zonk all night so I voiced my concerns only to be over ridden.

So off we went down these black as pitch country roads with only the most rudimentary knowledge of the area. She was calling out directions from the back seat as we came to the turn. I dated a girl from the same apartment complex so I knew this road dead ended at the complex.

As we’re driving we come upon what I think is a motorcycle in the distance only to get so close to it that I almost hit the back of it. With white knuckles I go to pass on the left and when we look right we all see a 6 horse team pulling a black funeral coach. It was complete with the driver on top at the reigns in period clothing and red lanterns hanging from the sides. The driver looked straight ahead and never broke his gaze or character. It scared the shit out of us but we thought maybe this is how they do it up here for fun?

So we drop her off and head back the same way we came totally expecting to see the coach and horses again as there was no other way to go on this road. But we see nothing, not even evidence of horses in the dirt road, no dust settling, not even a sound as it was super loud when we passed it ithe first time. But there was nothing there at all. At that point we both realized what we all saw.

I got stoned and were driving around and took a wrong exit off the freeway. Ended up down in this strange little community in a valley between some hills. Place seemed very odd and empty and a little too "perfect". We were wondering where the hell we were and what all these buildings and roads were doing in this little middle of nowhere place, we were also stoned and a little paranoid, and then we see people being driven around in these little trams like the type they have in the parking lots at Disneyland.

People just seemed blissfully unaware and staring off into space and we were like "WTF is this dude?? Is this some cult compound or what???" We turned our stoned asses around and drove out and got back on the freeway and out of there. Looked it up later and found out it was a place for mentally insane people to be rehabilitated and hopefully integrated back into society as some point. This little mini-town was all insane people and staff who work there and try to use it as a sort of "practice town". Still got some really weird energy driving around that place.

I actually live in creepy small town America. There is a population of 6500 people but there are more violent crimes, murders, dead bodies, missing people, and freak accidents than when I lived in a town of 30,000 population.
I saw people wearing black hoods inside of a church at night when I was walking my dog. Weird fucking shit. Apparently a village of Indians was burned to the ground, 3 were burned alive and cursed the land. Something is going on.

Ever been through Selma? That there is Tar Town. And all of the surrounding areas. Talk about negromancy. The hoodoo was poignant. Needless to say, I didn't slow down. Being unarmed, it's a hopeless fear that comes over you.

Re: Anyone here have any creepy "small town in the middle of nowhere" travel stories???
We went on a road trip a few years ago. When we hit New Mexico, I thought it would be fun to take an off the beaten path route. We drive for what felt like hours along this long lonely road when finally we came upon this little town that looked like what I would describe a sixties era place.

We stopped to get a bite to eat and everyone in the town was Mexican. Everyone! There was not a person in sight that even looked American. It was like we drove into a small city in Mexico. Everyone spoke Spanish, and we had a very difficult time communicating with the lady that took our lunch order.

Any way, we got back on the same stretch of road and drove for several hours, again there was nothing in sight. I pulled the car over on the side of the road and got out to stretch my legs and when I looked up at the sky, I had never seen a more beautiful view. There were absolutely no city lights, just the dark night and the brilliant display of stars above.

I climbed up on my hood of my car and leaned back on the windshield just to stare up at this beautiful display. Within a few seconds I heard what sounded like a dog barking, then it sounded like several dogs barking and before I climbed off the hood of my car I could hear these dogs charging towards me.

I jumped in the car, and right when I closed my car door, there were dogs all around my car. They were growling and jumping up towards the car windows. As I drove away they followed me for a good long way before I their barking subsided...

That's about it..

My brothers story.

He said he was driving through Virginia late one night after a particularly terrible fight with his old lady. He was headed back to New York and almost fell asleep driving. Wisely he pulled off a random exit just to park and sleep for a few hrs. He found some dark quiet road and pulled down it and parked. He said he went to sleep immediately and dreamt of the same place, he was even in the car and sleeping in the dream. The only difference in the dream was there was a group of evil looking pilgrims with hats and all surrounding his car and looking into the windows. He said the feeling of being watched was so strong and he was so scared that he immediately woke up and got the fuck out, driving straight to New York non stop.

I would like to hear if anyone here has any bizarre or scary experiences passing through these places in their lives.

Went to the diamond mine with a college friend in the early 80s. We were driving back to Cal from NE where we both attended Brown for the summer and stopped. There were two nice looking blondes there with their parents. The girls had the hillbilly accents but were knockouts.... better than anything we could get anywhere else. They had an old beat up car and we followed them home as they lived nearby -- well sort, 30 or so miles up in the damn hills including a full 10 of it on a dirt road. The girls were riding with us. They started talking dirty the moment we got in the car. Saying that sex was OK and the parents didn't care. This was unsettling..... life just doesn't work out like a porno especially in those days. We got to their "house" and went in for dinner. Right after walking in we went back out and got our bags because we forgot them. After coming back in --- they were all naked. Dad / Mom and the girls. Now the girls were even hotter than we thought (sometimes it's worse when naked) and their Mom who probably only 40 was super hot too. The dad was wanking right in front of us and I couldn't help but notice the guns in every corner and the isolation -- no one around anywhere. I told my friend, "wow, best day of our lives! but hey let's get the toys." We got in the car and left. Left the bags and all. Maybe it was a mistake but I could easily imagine getting cornholed at gunpoint and then buried in a shallow grave. There's no way in hell anyone would have even known what happened.

I have such a story, OP.

Back in early '05 my parents, my other sister, and I were coming back from my other sister's Army Boot Camp graduation in the Army base in Missouri. In the most north eastern tip part of Oklahoma from a freeway, or something like that anyways, we were needing to get more gas and some rest from all the activities earlier that day when we came across a decent sized gas station just across the railroad tracks. We stopped, and everything was going just fine till my sister and mother went into the gas station to use the restroom and buy the gas. My step father and I filled up the car and drove the car to a parking space in the parking lot to wait for my sister and mother. My step father and I talked about stuff I no longer remember what now. We ate some snacks and drank some cokes from the cooler we brought and had filled with various foodstuff for our trip

I went to go get a squeegee to clean off the windows, windshield, and rear windshield since they were fairly cloudy. I just got done cleaning the windshield when a gas store employee came out and told me to put up the squeegee because I was damaging. I told him that I was using it as intended so any damages are part of the normal wear and tear scheme of things. He demanded in a raised voice for me to quit cleaning the car's windshield, windows, and rear windshield. I told him in an equally stern voice, "No! I am not damaging the damn thing!". He told me he was calling the cops on me. I told him, "Pfft!". I finished cleaning the windshield, rear windshield, and windows when I figured I would clean off the tail lights and headlights too just out of spite for the guy before putting up the squeegee where I found it.

The cops who came were actually the Sheriff himself who had a Deputy with him. My step dad and I were seriously intimidated at this point figuring if the cops would be called out for something so minor as using a squeegee as intended then I might actually be shot and killed today. My step dad and I talked to the sheriff long enough for my sister and mother to come out of the gas station. The both of them were somewhat loud about trying to get to the bottom of things. The sheriff then came off his high horse, but still did his best to intimidate me specifically. About this time he called in the former sheriff of the county. This guy actually brought a small posse with him. The sheriff and former sheriff were somewhat loudly talking. I overheard the sheriff and former sheriff discuss how to deal with me since I am indeed a real werewolf to them.

My heart fell into the Abyss at this point. I just knew I was going to die today. Not because they what they somehow knew about me regardless if they were accurate or inaccurate, but because they were drop dead serious about calling me a werewolf. I swear it was some very serious divine intervention that allowed all of us to get out of that situation alive and well. The sheriff and his cohorts simply demanded my family and I get into our car and leave town never to return. He would personally escort us out of town. He really did escort us out of town with his lights on, but not his sirens on.

Re: Anyone here have any creepy "small town in the middle of nowhere" travel stories???
I was on the last tour bus pulling into the parking lot at Tulum, MX. There were two Mexican tour guide guys waiting there who both wanted to lead a paid tour. They were arguing over who would get to do it, then a punch was thrown. Then another one. There was a stampede off the bus, and all the tourists made a circle around the pugilists, yelling. I was the only person who stayed on that bus because fist fights turn my stomach. One of the fighters’ wife had been on the bus with us and she talked ‘em down and made them stop fighting. Tulum is a historic and scenic place. Worth a visit if you’re ever in that area. This story of mine happened a long time ago, though. Like maybe 30 years ago now.

Ever been through Selma? That there is Tar Town. And all of the surrounding areas. Talk about negromancy. The hoodoo was poignant. Needless to say, I didn't slow down. Being unarmed, it's a hopeless fear that comes over you.

"Fuck, I could die out here, and whose going to know?"

Re: Anyone here have any creepy "small town in the middle of nowhere" travel stories???
While riding three mph in a bicycle lane I was sideswiped by a passing motor vehicle. Five days later a young woman showed up at my place and said she saw the accident. She described a motor vehicle in the opposite lane that crossed the double yellow line into the adjacent lane, then entered my bicycle lane. It hit my rear wheel and then crossed back into the adjacent lane; back over the double yellow lines and into it's original lane.
This young lady never spoke to me again; the police, my lawyer or my auto insurance company which my lawyer contacted because a motor vehicle was involved.
Here's the small town part. One motorist behind me said I was riding 20 to 25 mph in the middle of the traffic lane and went over my handlebars. A second said 30 to 35 mph and very close to the double yellow lines and went over my handlebars. The problem for the witnesses was that number one testified he was twenty feet behind me before the accident he described; his Ford 250 was also 21 feet long.
Before the accident she described, witness number two said she was fifty feet behind me, which means she would have been nine feet behind the rear end of a large pick up, of which she made no mention in her testimony, and would have blocked her view of the accident.
Witness number one stopped seven feet away from my body after the accident, even though it takes forty feet to stop at twenty mph. Before the accident he described twenty feet behind me, he would have run me over.
The jury found for the insurance company. To have found against the insurance company would have started a hunt by the company for the hit and run driver in that small town. Better to blame the victim than to exercise the auto policy because somebody every one liked would go to jail.
