Don't speed across Macon County, GA.
 Quoting: Adytum

Macon does have some interesting folk. That route from Atlanta to Savannah gets pretty interesting in the middle - I don't like to even get out of my car. LOL! The rural areas around Valdosta aren't much better. But if you are thinking speed traps, north Hall County, Habersham, and Rabun Counties are about the worst. They like to get all those vacationers along 23.

My cousin grew up in a farm town near here. This is well known. Lots of kids cruise through these every weekend. Very curvy, remote country roads. Creepy stuff.

Re: Anyone here have any creepy "small town in the middle of nowhere" travel stories???
While riding three mph in a bicycle lane I was sideswiped by a passing motor vehicle. Five days later a young woman showed up at my place and said she saw the accident. She described a motor vehicle in the opposite lane that crossed the double yellow line into the adjacent lane, then entered my bicycle lane. It hit my rear wheel and then crossed back into the adjacent lane; back over the double yellow lines and into it's original lane.
This young lady never spoke to me again; the police, my lawyer or my auto insurance company which my lawyer contacted because a motor vehicle was involved.
Here's the small town part. One motorist behind me said I was riding 20 to 25 mph in the middle of the traffic lane and went over my handlebars. A second said 30 to 35 mph and very close to the double yellow lines and went over my handlebars. The problem for the witnesses was that number one testified he was twenty feet behind me before the accident he described; his Ford 250 was also 21 feet long.
Before the accident she described, witness number two said she was fifty feet behind me, which means she would have been nine feet behind the rear end of a large pick up, of which she made no mention in her testimony, and would have blocked her view of the accident.
Witness number one stopped seven feet away from my body after the accident, even though it takes forty feet to stop at twenty mph. Before the accident he described twenty feet behind me, he would have run me over.
The jury found for the insurance company. To have found against the insurance company would have started a hunt by the company for the hit and run driver in that small town. Better to blame the victim than to exercise the auto policy because somebody every one liked would go to jail.

I lived for a time in a tiny town in eastern Inyo county California, one county mountie who lived in town, his nearest backup was a two hour drive away if the guy was leadfooting it all the way so he (and we) knew he couldn't afford to piss off the locals. He had one rule- don't blow the stop sign in town and everything would be cool. Used to cross paths with him every now and then on the highway north or south of town usually doing 100++, roll down the window and wave as we passed and he'd just wave back. Not a luxury out of towners got, 75 mph or failure to use the signals got them cited. Good cop and well liked member of the community, local crime rate close to zero.

Pretty much the same here, don't be a blatant criminal fuckup and the town cops (all three of them) don't give a shit what the locals do. Make them write up a report or take you to the county lock up and your name goes on the shit list, do it twice and you'd be well advised to move.

I was driving on the interstate (74) going to Iowa and somewhere in the middle of Illinois it started raining so hard I could not see. There was an exit and a sign for some flee-bag motel, but it was better than dying on the Interstate. So I checked in. No restaurants - just some local hall where one of the local groups (Lions, Rotary or some such) put on a meal. I went there to eat and ordered the stew. It had chunks of ground meat in it that I swear was dog food.

GPS dropped us in the middle of Gary Indiana due to a highway closing. It was the middle of the night, it was raining, and the rain was oily due to all the industrial filth. There was almost no one on the roads, just industrial decay everywhere. Big stacks of refineries or whatever burning off excess gasses in pillars of flame.

It felt like Mordor ate Blade Runner and shat out this town.

I cannot really imagine how anyone lives there long term. I would rather be homeless than live in that place I think.

You know on those road trips where you pass by or stop at those little towns with like one diner/gas station/general store/etc. and you wonder who the hell actually lives there?

I would like to hear if anyone here has any bizarre or scary experiences passing through these places in their lives.

The only personal one I can think of off hand is a time when my buddy and I got stoned and were driving around and took a wrong exit off the freeway. Ended up down in this strange little community in a valley between some hills. Place seemed very odd and empty and a little too "perfect". We were wondering where the hell we were and what all these buildings and roads were doing in this little middle of nowhere place, we were also stoned and a little paranoid, and then we see people being driven around in these little trams like the type they have in the parking lots at Disneyland.

People just seemed blissfully unaware and staring off into space and we were like "WTF is this dude?? Is this some cult compound or what???" We turned our stoned asses around and drove out and got back on the freeway and out of there. Looked it up later and found out it was a place for mentally insane people to be rehabilitated and hopefully integrated back into society as some point. This little mini-town was all insane people and staff who work there and try to use it as a sort of "practice town". Still got some really weird energy driving around that place.

I have such a story, OP.

Back in early '05 my parents, my other sister, and I were coming back from my other sister's Army Boot Camp graduation in the Army base in Missouri. In the most north eastern tip part of Oklahoma from a freeway, or something like that anyways, we were needing to get more gas and some rest from all the activities earlier that day when we came across a decent sized gas station just across the railroad tracks. We stopped, and everything was going just fine till my sister and mother went into the gas station to use the restroom and buy the gas. My step father and I filled up the car and drove the car to a parking space in the parking lot to wait for my sister and mother. My step father and I talked about stuff I no longer remember what now. We ate some snacks and drank some cokes from the cooler we brought and had filled with various foodstuff for our trip

I went to go get a squeegee to clean off the windows, windshield, and rear windshield since they were fairly cloudy. I just got done cleaning the windshield when a gas store employee came out and told me to put up the squeegee because I was damaging. I told him that I was using it as intended so any damages are part of the normal wear and tear scheme of things. He demanded in a raised voice for me to quit cleaning the car's windshield, windows, and rear windshield. I told him in an equally stern voice, "No! I am not damaging the damn thing!". He told me he was calling the cops on me. I told him, "Pfft!". I finished cleaning the windshield, rear windshield, and windows when I figured I would clean off the tail lights and headlights too just out of spite for the guy before putting up the squeegee where I found it.

The cops who came were actually the Sheriff himself who had a Deputy with him. My step dad and I were seriously intimidated at this point figuring if the cops would be called out for something so minor as using a squeegee as intended then I might actually be shot and killed today. My step dad and I talked to the sheriff long enough for my sister and mother to come out of the gas station. The both of them were somewhat loud about trying to get to the bottom of things. The sheriff then came off his high horse, but still did his best to intimidate me specifically. About this time he called in the former sheriff of the county. This guy actually brought a small posse with him. The sheriff and former sheriff were somewhat loudly talking. I overheard the sheriff and former sheriff discuss how to deal with me since I am indeed a real werewolf to them.

My heart fell into the Abyss at this point. I just knew I was going to die today. Not because they what they somehow knew about me regardless if they were accurate or inaccurate, but because they were drop dead serious about calling me a werewolf. I swear it was some very serious divine intervention that allowed all of us to get out of that situation alive and well. The sheriff and his cohorts simply demanded my family and I get into our car and leave town never to return. He would personally escort us out of town. He really did escort us out of town with his lights on, but not his sirens on.

The southeastern tip of KS along with the NE tip of OK, NW Ark, and SW Missouri is an area to stay out of when you can. Cheap hunting ground and lots of caves. Heard a lot of stories about that area. Strange homeless men that squat in the caves. Killing of farm animals. Poaching of deer. Just not great people living there in general.

I think all small towns have skeletons in the closets here and there, because, there is people in them and people can be down right creepy if they're on the wrong side of things. Without God bad things can happen, and usually do.

I grew up in a creepy little town. My grandpa was sent there as a minister, and I think we were about the only ones there who were not cousins. Even as a kid I couldn't quite get my mind around why there were so many stupid kids at school. I mean, 40 kids graduated in my class, but 10 couldn't read! People would do such stupid and dangerous things - playing chicken, loosening the wheel nuts on the school buses, huge drunks... After growing up there, it takes a lot to scare me.

I wouldn't say it was creepy but it was out of the usual. My grandmother was horribly ill and I was traveling from New Mexico to Texas to see her. I was really down and upset at the time, feeling a bit helpless and desperate.

I drive at night, and this night there was an incredible thunderstorm. I was tired, lost my way and ended up in a parking spot in front of some small business (I think it was a little community bank). It went from bad weather noisy -- to instant quiet, the rain stopped, the thunder stopped.

Somehow I got disoriented but I tuned in on windshield wipers making this sound of rubber scrubbing glass. I looked up through the windshield and I saw this giant LED MARQUEE high above my car. It said "THERE IS NO GOD". I kept watching it through the patters of raindrops and it scrolled down and read "BUT ME".

That altered state feeling kind of faded back into normal. The air seemed like it had gotten a little cleaner, calmer. I backed up, continued on way and wondered how I ended up there to read that.

Back in the 80's I had gone hunting in the Blackwater management area which was part of Eglin air base. I had finished my morning hunt and took off just looking around at some of the other areas that would be new for me to hunt.
I see these beautiful old growth pine trees as i head down a one road access. I get to a swing gate that was open but said No trespassing Federal Gov. Shit!
I looked around there weren't any side roads that i had passed in the half mile or so down this dirt road, No way can i turn around in the road, had nothing but a steep ditch on either side all the way down to this point, then up ahead i see not more than a half block a side road. I'll just go up here and turn back and head out. Moving through the swing gate i made it to the side road and was backing up to turn around. I rammed into the front of army jeep all camo WTF?

I'm a pretty good observer, I rarely miss seeing anything especially a Jeep. They had me blocked in and I'm sort of in shock? Where the Hell you guys come from? There had been no side roads that i passed and no damn way could they have gotten behind me or I would have seen them in my rear view.

Well! Before I even get out these two guys had their rifles trained on me. It went something like this. Sir! you are Trespassing on Federal Government Property!! Me: Fellows I understand that and if you noticed I was backing out to get the hell out of here since you can see I had no way of doing so and I rammed your jeep. They lowered their guns and they backed the jeep out. Letting me go.
I had checked the dirt road when leaving and I just never saw any track other than mine. I was stumped how they got there. There just wasn't a way to jump me like that without me seeing them.
Years on I found out they had all kinds of Special forces going out there to train etc. Just weird stuff how that happened.

I was 19, driving from north east Pa. to L.A. Got lost somewhere in the mid-west, I think Indiana (don't remember exactly, it was almost 30 years ago). Tiny little nothing of a town, and I needed a room. There was a small little motel, and I got a room. Pull up in front of my room, and this lady is driving through the parking lot. She was drunk as all hell, not particularly attractive or anything, but we started talking. She asked me if I wanted to go to a party with her... So, me being a stupid 19 year old (young dumb and full of, well you know) I was like SURE!

I get in her car and we start driving, we're going out into the middle of nowhere (farm fields, and nothing but dark for miles). I was getting pretty nervous, and told her I wanted to go back to my room. She kept driving though, and at this point I'm freaking out. I start yelling at her to pull over and let me out. Finally she stopped, so I opened the car door, getting ready to book it. She was like, "ok I'll take you back, don't worry". So, I sat back down, and she drove me back to my room. She ended up coming in, getting naked, and well... You know broccolicowbonkbananasexhidbstarwars

My mother and father were vising my aunt and uncle once years ago (he was career AF). They lived in Ft Walton Beach. So, my aunt and uncle were giving them the nickel tour of the area and it was dark and they were out walking and came across a sacrificial ceremony. They sure got out of there fast. This happened somewhere around the base. They never would say exactly what they saw, but they were both pretty tough people, so it must have been bad if they were scared and freaked out.

Of course, Midwesterners have their parties in the middle of nowhere on purpose. The big place for us growing up was this old gravel pit we used to fish at during the day, about 2 miles from our farm, but about 10 miles from the nearest town. Middle of the cornfields in Iowa. Loud music, horsing around - nobody could hear you, and we only had one cop, so if he came in one side of the drive, we all went out the other. Had to watch driving home from town at night, though, as there were always drunks on the road.

Driving in Mexico and decided to turn when seeing a sign that said HOTEL. Drove in and the hotel had little trains and small huts everywhere. It was cool. The people who were staying there were the TOP COMPANIES IN THE WORLD having a meeting. I walked in on them by mistake. They stopped and stared. I left quickly.

When I was in my early 20's, I was on a roll-out for a telecom company that I worked for at the time.

I was in St Bernard parish staying at a crappy little motel passing through on my way to another site, and my company van got towed.

The guy at the desk at the motel knew what "company" had towed it, gave me the number, and I called the guy who came to the motel & picked me up, and after paying him $200 he gave me a ride in his tow-truck to get the van.

We started off on pavement, then to a dirt road for about 10 miles, and then turned off into a cut-path through the swamp... there were literally trees brushing both sides of the truck as we went down the path, and water 3 feet to the right & left of the path.

Dude looked like something out of Deliverance... maybe 3 teeth, week-old beard, dirty as hell with a Cajun accent that made it hard to understand him.

I kept expecting him to demand that I squeal like a pig... he didn't.

We rounded a cut, & came to a chain strung between two trees. He got out, dropped the chain, and as we rounded the next bend, I saw a tire-less car on blocks, and my van, with four Rottweilers chained to it staked at the corners in a clearing just big enough for the two vehicles, surrounded by swamp.

I had to climb in through the back doors while he held back the snarling dogs there... and then I left, made my way back to pavement, and back to civilization.

Not so scary... but qualifies for this thread.

I used to live in Indiana, Pa when I went to tech school... Just outside of town was a resovoir and some woods that were being logged. We used to take our trucks and 4x4s and go out the logging roads and party in the middle of nowhere. One night my friends and I piled in my Blazer and went out to smoke/drink. We were really far back this one road when a blue Grand Prix pulled up with two blonde chicks. They got out and started talking with us, next thing you know we're all smoking/drinking and they've got the stereo in my trucked cranked and they're dancing having a good time... About an hour goes by and the one girl looks at me and says we should follow them back to their place where all their other girlfriends are at...

We all decide this is a good idea, and we follow these chicks to the other side of the resovoir where they say the live. We pull up to a gate that says "Absolutely No Trespassing", no house in sight, just another long dirt road. The one hops out and opens the gate and tells us to drive through... We kind of all at the same time got a weird vibe and took off.

I have no idea till this day if we missed out on a house full of chicks or missed out on being chopped to pieces in some psycho's basement.

Those who "sense" deeply say the road between Pine Bluff and Little Rock, AR has a "bad feel." Is this a true sensitive? I'd go with that, not having driven it. Pine Bluff, a former Nice Town. Have seen a house for free there, and a mansion almost cheaper on craigslist, five years ago. Has a historic Fox Theatre the few society and rich care about. Even Arkansas derides this poor damn town.

But the angst feel comes up Highway 165, according to this person. I believe it. The strangest knowers end up in nasty old Ark., drawn to the crystals or nature or a free mobile home. Don't move here. It's just horrible. Libs, we'll dress your hide up on a post.

Not exactly a small town in the middle of nowhere; but we were hiking in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, and we came across an old dilapidated cabin up there near the lake.
Cecret Lake to be exact.
The cabin was barely a skeleton of itself, 40% of it was missing.

There were 100's of names signed on the inside main room. Signatures and names were graffitied across the old pieces of wood barely hanging on their nails.

On the ceiling in writing that was faded and old, I spotted the name "Ted Bundy 197?" (Sorry I can't remember the exact date)

I have a few pictures of it, I'll have to dig out the disc and see if I can find it. This is not the first time I have referenced this cabin, so I would like to have the picture on hand...

Lived in a bunch of small towns growing up. Dont have any cool stories though about them.

I went on this camping trip once with a bunch of city folks. They had never been camping before, so me and a budy took them to this spot way north of Lake Berryessa in norther Cali. We did the usual joking around about bigfoot and chupakabras while getting more and more shit faced. There was a group of feral hogs that made some noise and it scared the women for a bit but after a while everybody forgot about it and kept on drinking and partying.

The next morning I was the first one to wake up and saw that one of the guys, who got really drunk, had wandered off and passed out about 20 to 30 feet from the camp site. But there had to of been about 10 pigs sleeping around this guy!

Feral hogs can be very dangerous and i got worried that they might attack this guy if we scared them. I woke up my friend who was from NM showed him what was going on. We came up with a plan and quietly and slowly woke everybody up we could and got them in their cars. We ended up honking our horns and they scattered pretty quick. Of course the dude got pissed we woke him up that way but we thought it was funny.

Re: Anyone here have any creepy "small town in the middle of nowhere" travel stories???
I did a ghost tour in viginia city once and when we arrived we were the only people on the tour with this creepy old man host. So he walked us through the whole tour all around the city and the last destination was an old hospital, no longer in use. This old strange man locked us in the hospital all by ourselves to ghost hunt or really just walk around by ourselves but we were there alone set apart from the people who actually live there. This wasn’t a tourist time so the little city was pretty well empty. So it’s night time and we are alone walking around and I can’t help but think if we are murdered here nobody would know where we were or that we were even there. When he locked us in the building he left a knife on the counter and told us to use it if we needed it. Most of the lighting was off and the atmosphere was creepy enough but then I wondered if he was watching us on cameras from a nearby building. My suspicions on this were confirmed when I told my husband I had had enough of the hospital and shortly after the man came walking back. Of course I made it out ok but the whole thing was eerie.

Utah is all like that. Creepy Mormon vibe everywhere. They do not like anyone else.
