I can’t believe Skidmore, Missouri hasn’t been mentioned. I’ve been through there, very odd feeling traveling through. Look up the history of Skidmore, definitely strange stuff happening in a town with less than 300 people.

YES! This!

I was passing through Missouri a couple of years ago and pulled into Skidmore after driving for the past couple of hours. I decided to stop and get out so I could stretch my legs, and I just felt like I wasn't welcomed there. It was so uncomfortable and awkward. The town was mostly dead, I certainly didn't see any other cars on the road and the few people I saw just stared me down as if they didn't want me there.

One older guy was walking by so I said hi and waved, he just snarled at me and gave me this very unfriendly look and kept on walking by without ever saying a word. I noticed across the street was this lady who was just standing there staring directly at me. I gave a friendly wave and nothing, she just continued standing there staring me down. To this day I still can see her face in my mind... completely emotionless, nothing... just this blank stare. Definitely nothing friendly about it. I've never been in a town where I felt so unwelcome.

I quickly got back into my car and left. I got to Maryville which is just slightly to the northeast of Skidmore and ended up stopping to get gas there. While at the gas station I got to chatting with the cashier and I mentioned my experience passing through Skidmore and she was telling me that the locals in the area tend to avoid Skidmore and that the people there are not friendly at all. She said if she has to pass that way she purposely goes out of her way to bypass Skidmore to avoid actually having to drive through there.

She told me of a guy who worked a different shift at the gas station that pass through Skidmore and said a resident there began throwing bottles at his vehicle so he sped off and got the hell out of there.

Until that day I had never even heard of Skidmore, so that night after I settled in for the night at the hotel I stayed at I did a Google search on Skidmore, MO and I was shocked about the dark history surrounding that town.

So much dark, strange history... given that combined with the fact there's literally nothing to do there it was no wonder why people are so strange there.

Well, it wasn't exactly a town, but last year, my husband and I were driving through New Mexico on the way to Colorado and there was a stretch of probably 100 miles of just NOTHING. No small towns at all and only the occasional run down farmhouse or trailer. That wouldn't normally be that creepy, but we drove by 3 burned out cars on the side the road, all within about 20 miles of each other. Completely burned up...now how would that even happen??

You know on those road trips where you pass by or stop at those little towns with like one diner/gas station/general store/etc. and you wonder who the hell actually lives there?

I would like to hear if anyone here has any bizarre or scary experiences passing through these places in their lives.

The only personal one I can think of off hand is a time when my buddy and I got stoned and were driving around and took a wrong exit off the freeway. Ended up down in this strange little community in a valley between some hills. Place seemed very odd and empty and a little too "perfect". We were wondering where the hell we were and what all these buildings and roads were doing in this little middle of nowhere place, we were also stoned and a little paranoid, and then we see people being driven around in these little trams like the type they have in the parking lots at Disneyland.

People just seemed blissfully unaware and staring off into space and we were like "WTF is this dude?? Is this some cult compound or what???" We turned our stoned asses around and drove out and got back on the freeway and out of there. Looked it up later and found out it was a place for mentally insane people to be rehabilitated and hopefully integrated back into society as some point. This little mini-town was all insane people and staff who work there and try to use it as a sort of "practice town". Still got some really weird energy driving around that place.

I have such a story, OP.

Back in early '05 my parents, my other sister, and I were coming back from my other sister's Army Boot Camp graduation in the Army base in Missouri. In the most north eastern tip part of Oklahoma from a freeway, or something like that anyways, we were needing to get more gas and some rest from all the activities earlier that day when we came across a decent sized gas station just across the railroad tracks. We stopped, and everything was going just fine till my sister and mother went into the gas station to use the restroom and buy the gas. My step father and I filled up the car and drove the car to a parking space in the parking lot to wait for my sister and mother. My step father and I talked about stuff I no longer remember what now. We ate some snacks and drank some cokes from the cooler we brought and had filled with various foodstuff for our trip

I went to go get a squeegee to clean off the windows, windshield, and rear windshield since they were fairly cloudy. I just got done cleaning the windshield when a gas store employee came out and told me to put up the squeegee because I was damaging. I told him that I was using it as intended so any damages are part of the normal wear and tear scheme of things. He demanded in a raised voice for me to quit cleaning the car's windshield, windows, and rear windshield. I told him in an equally stern voice, "No! I am not damaging the damn thing!". He told me he was calling the cops on me. I told him, "Pfft!". I finished cleaning the windshield, rear windshield, and windows when I figured I would clean off the tail lights and headlights too just out of spite for the guy before putting up the squeegee where I found it.

The cops who came were actually the Sheriff himself who had a Deputy with him. My step dad and I were seriously intimidated at this point figuring if the cops would be called out for something so minor as using a squeegee as intended then I might actually be shot and killed today. My step dad and I talked to the sheriff long enough for my sister and mother to come out of the gas station. The both of them were somewhat loud about trying to get to the bottom of things. The sheriff then came off his high horse, but still did his best to intimidate me specifically. About this time he called in the former sheriff of the county. This guy actually brought a small posse with him. The sheriff and former sheriff were somewhat loudly talking. I overheard the sheriff and former sheriff discuss how to deal with me since I am indeed a real werewolf to them.

My heart fell into the Abyss at this point. I just knew I was going to die today. Not because they what they somehow knew about me regardless if they were accurate or inaccurate, but because they were drop dead serious about calling me a werewolf. I swear it was some very serious divine intervention that allowed all of us to get out of that situation alive and well. The sheriff and his cohorts simply demanded my family and I get into our car and leave town never to return. He would personally escort us out of town. He really did escort us out of town with his lights on, but not his sirens on.

The southeastern tip of KS along with the NE tip of OK, NW Ark, and SW Missouri is an area to stay out of when you can. Cheap hunting ground and lots of caves. Heard a lot of stories about that area. Strange homeless men that squat in the caves. Killing of farm animals. Poaching of deer. Just not great people living there in general.
 Quoting: GA Girl

If the poster is claiming the above story happened in the far tip of Southeast Kansas, I call BS. As a lifelong resident and former Sheriff Deputy in Cherokee County, and was at the time in 2005, this is not something that would have happened. The deputies and Sheriff at that time would not have acted in the manner that this poster claimed,, zero chance in hell of that happening. Maybe this wasn't in Cherokee County, KS... but even if not, I still find it unlikely.

That's ok, AC. Stay dubious of me despite me being fairly clear with what I said. Now go better your reading comprehension. I guarantee you'll be thanking me for such awesome advice... eventually. Hah!

Yup.
Used to sell encyclopedias door to door for a few years. Seen many, many strange places. This happened in El Paso outside of Fort Bliss not a small town by any means. After a day of hell my partner and I grabbed a bite and a few beers. Met some folks at the bar and decided to go get stoned with them. Out to the car and they said, "oops...forgot the weed at the house. Follow us" Okay what the hell. All the way through town we drive... south toward the border. Get to some shit ass trailer where I am looking into Mexico a few hundred yards away. Long story short we were held at gunpoint for a couple of hours by these fucks. Kept telling us nobody would ever find us buried in the desert. We ended up catching them off guard and grabbing this big ass gun from them. I had never held a Desert Eagle before and Christ if this thing didn't weigh a ton. We drove for an hour out into the desert until we felt safe. Wiped that gun down for prints and buried it out in the scrub.
Thought I was going to die that night. Met up with some cool locals a few nights later and told them the story. These guys said they were probably Mex mafia. This was in the 90s and I had never heard the word cartel at that point.

My family and I were on vacation in the mid - 70's. We were traveling in Arizona when my mom saw an off ramp sign for "Bumblebee" and said, "that sounds interesting... Let's check it out!". My dad took the exit. It took a while to go through the climbing, winding road. We finally got to Bumblebee, AZ. There was a sign when we got there that said, "Bumblebee - closed to the public. I don't know if was ever proven to be true or false over the years though.

Yep! It's scary to know that there are probably legitimate looking people out there holding up to authoritative jobs who are actual werewolf, demon, and/or other type of supernatural hunters more or less in their spare time in real life. I don't think that sheriff and his former sheriff friend were LARPing either. Being threatened to go jail for no valid reason at that point too seriously helped to motivate me to get in the car and leave town for good. Just remember, everyone, even the most sane looking of people can be a jumble of frayed sparking wires in their heads.

There’s a place in NY called Onion town. Grew up nearby and the rumors where that if you decided to venture in there, the residents would chase you out. There’s quite a bit about the place online if you search the net.

This didn't happen directly to me but I was slightly involved in it. I lived out in Aspen, Colorado for several years. In tourist areas like this you end up with roommates from all over. One roommate at one point was from a small town in South Dakota. He drove home one week and was on his way back when he called me saying he was being pulled over by a police officer in some small town in Kansas. The line went dead. I tried for a couple hours to get a hold of him as well as the police station in the town he had named but they didn't have a station. After no luck I called his father who was a State Police officer in South Dakota. He immediately drove there and called me a couple of times and just upon arrival to the town and again the call dropped in mid conversation. I tried reaching him as well for days after and never was able to get a hold of either one of them again. Their home number stopped working about a month later. I still wonder what the hell happened to him and his dad. I can't remember the name of the town, tried looking on a map to see if I could find it but no luck.

When we drive through Gary, Indiana we thought we were on the set of a zombie apocalypse movie.

The strangest place I’ve ever visited was Nauvoo, IL. It’s where Joseph Smith and his brother took the Mormons to settle in Illinois. My wife and I rode the bike up. We were in black leathers for road rash.

We were hungry, so we stopped at the only family restaurant in town. That’s when the weirdness started. The whole place went quiet and just stared at us, mouths agape.

It was clear they didn’t want us there. Terrible service and judgmental gawking and whispering the whole time.

We ate and got out of there.
