There is one around here that the locals warned me to not even go to, and I never have but will someday.

Now true or not, apparently some hippies back in the day settled there, which is true of a lot of places around here.

Some feuding started, I don't know the exact reasons, and it got out of control. To this day some of these places have no police presence, you're on your own.

So it got worse and worse until one group beheaded the other group and put their heads on pikes around the town.

So that's the legend, and the whole town is said to be haunted.

You know on those road trips where you pass by or stop at those little towns with like one diner/gas station/general store/etc. and you wonder who the hell actually lives there?

I would like to hear if anyone here has any bizarre or scary experiences passing through these places in their lives.

The only personal one I can think of off hand is a time when my buddy and I got stoned and were driving around and took a wrong exit off the freeway. Ended up down in this strange little community in a valley between some hills. Place seemed very odd and empty and a little too "perfect". We were wondering where the hell we were and what all these buildings and roads were doing in this little middle of nowhere place, we were also stoned and a little paranoid, and then we see people being driven around in these little trams like the type they have in the parking lots at Disneyland.

People just seemed blissfully unaware and staring off into space and we were like "WTF is this dude?? Is this some cult compound or what???" We turned our stoned asses around and drove out and got back on the freeway and out of there. Looked it up later and found out it was a place for mentally insane people to be rehabilitated and hopefully integrated back into society as some point. This little mini-town was all insane people and staff who work there and try to use it as a sort of "practice town". Still got some really weird energy driving around that place.

Yep! One of my sisters was engaged with a Mormon many years ago. I met him physically. He was nice enough, but his energies were extremely creepy to me. There's something very off about Mormons. Plain and simple.

I have a 'creepy' large town in the middle of somewhere stuck story. Yes, a grey man had spent a lifetime existing in a squalid and dank little hole, festering in his shitty pants and trifle and soup smeared beard. Living in rot, living on someone else's expense, and wasting away like a plastic container. Ring any bells?
 Quoting: England 77766897

In India a girlfriend and I rented motorcycles and visited this religious community in this rocky area of India. This guy gave us a tour of the place, and we had to participate in the rituals to go inside the bolder/rock buildings. There was a cave in there where some holy man sat for 70 years. How could anyone sit in a dank little cave for 70 years not doing anything but meditating?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76202283

Well now when you put it like that, then I at least understand the living in a dank little cave.

I saw it mentioned, but I also vouch for Skidmore, Missouri. Live not far from there, anytime you pass through the locals there just stares you down. Don’t dare try talking to them. It’s a very small community, everyone knows everyone, they’ll know at first sight that you are an outsider and they are not welcoming at all. Those of us who live nearby avoid going through there, if you don’t live in Skidmore, Missouri then stay away. Even if you simply drive through, the residents will stare you down. There are stories about people driving through and residents throwing stuff at their vehicle and chasing them out.

Check out this video of skidmore. This guy is driving around, telling stories about what has happened there, and at the 7:01 minute mark, you can catch a glimpse of someone's garage or shed, and it has a black upside down 5 pointed star on the side of it. Small town Satanism. Very creepy place.

This didn't happen directly to me but I was slightly involved in it. I lived out in Aspen, Colorado for several years. In tourist areas like this you end up with roommates from all over. One roommate at one point was from a small town in South Dakota. He drove home one week and was on his way back when he called me saying he was being pulled over by a police officer in some small town in Kansas. The line went dead. I tried for a couple hours to get a hold of him as well as the police station in the town he had named but they didn't have a station. After no luck I called his father who was a State Police officer in South Dakota. He immediately drove there and called me a couple of times and just upon arrival to the town and again the call dropped in mid conversation. I tried reaching him as well for days after and never was able to get a hold of either one of them again. Their home number stopped working about a month later. I still wonder what the hell happened to him and his dad. I can't remember the name of the town, tried looking on a map to see if I could find it but no luck.

There are many creepy old places in WV, PA, and NY. Inbred type places.

I have to wonder if there are actually whole small towns/communities in the US that have never had a census worker visit and are virtually unincorporated and so physically 'hidden' that they have literally very little access to the rest of the state or country.

GPS dropped us in the middle of Gary Indiana due to a highway closing. It was the middle of the night, it was raining, and the rain was oily due to all the industrial filth. There was almost no one on the roads, just industrial decay everywhere. Big stacks of refineries or whatever burning off excess gasses in pillars of flame.

It felt like Mordor ate Blade Runner and shat out this town.

I cannot really imagine how anyone lives there long term. I would rather be homeless than live in that place I think.

I found out the name and history of the place that we ended up in the original post here. Lanterman Developmental Center. I guess the place has been around since the 1920s but closed down permanently in 2015. Supposed to have a strange past and is massively haunted. Interesting place to research for any paranormal minded people in the Southern California area!

If you want a creepy place to visit, let me introduce you to Stull, KS. The people living there are complete assholes and they do not like outsiders. My great great grandpa is buried there, I never been there until a few years ago I was nearby so decided to stop and try to find my great great grandpa's grave. Some jackass living across the street comes out with shotgun in hand and crosses the road and comes into the cemetery yelling some nonsense and telling me to get the hell out of there.

I explained to him that I wasn't from the area, that I knew my great great grandfather was buried there and I happened to be passing by and was trying to find his grave. Asshole had no care in the world and continued screaming at me to get the hell out of there.

I said fuck it, got into my car and pulled out and as I did a few other people were throwing shit at my car and chasing me as I drove away.

It's a very small community and the people there are fucking insane.

This didn't happen directly to me but I was slightly involved in it. I lived out in Aspen, Colorado for several years. In tourist areas like this you end up with roommates from all over. Cool story, but probably bullshit.

If he was in South Dakota and was headed for Aspen, CO, why would he drive through Kansas? A little out of the way. Wouldn't it be easier to cut SW through Nebraska?

Oy vey,

Reading through this I'm shocked to not see Tucumcari, New Mexico on the list. That place is a complete shit hole overran with very shady people. First time I drove to Vegas I stopped here, and I quickly left. Second time I went to Vegas I just drove around it.

Yeah, I've made that drive from South Dakota to Colorado.. if at any point in that drive you're in Kansas, you suck at navigating and going way out of the way. I call bullshit on this as well, unless you're completely stupid at driving there's no reason you would ever end up in Kansas.

Check out this video of skidmore. This guy is driving around, telling stories about what has happened there, and at the 7:01 minute mark, you can catch a glimpse of someone's garage or shed, and it has a black upside down 5 pointed star on the side of it. Small town Satanism. Very creepy place.

Okay, why do you guys keep bringing up Skidmore? I live in Skidmore, and the crap I've seen posted on here about Skidmore is pure BS. It's a typical small, mid-west town and the folks here are friendly regardless if you're an "outsider" or live in town. To say that we're unwelcoming to outsiders is complete BS. We have outsiders come into town constantly, and stop in at our local tavern all the time and they're treated no differently than anyone else; with the utmost respect.

Not sure why the sudden obsession with Skidmore on here, but please stop dragging our town through the mud with your BS stories. Not saying you didn't pass through some small town in Missouri where you had said experiences, but sure wasn't in Skidmore.
