Interesting. How old were you at the time? Thoughts on Skidmore?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77748147

I was 25. Skidmore is pretty far from me. It is far north of state by Iowa. I am by Branson.

What was your friend doing to Arkansas? Couldn’t they have called TripleA or something? Why you have to go?

Why you so nosy? You live there huh? 😵

A couple years ago my brother and I were trying to get back to the Interstate in Western Missouri and we passed through some small, hole in the wall town called Skidmore, MO. That town was just weird. I've been through hundreds of small towns in my life, but the vibe I got from this small town was just not right. My brother and I are both smokers, and had been driving for a couple of hours so stopped along the side of the road to stretch our legs and have a couple cigarette's.

Across the street was this lady who was just standing there staring us down the whole time. No expression on her face what-so-ever, it was so weird.

This other guy comes walking past us and he looks at us and said "leave, outsiders are not welcomed here". We said screw this and got back into the car and just got the hell out of there.

Definitely the creepiest town I've been through.

Skidmore, MO.... creepiest Missouri town ever.... don't go through there, ever.

No it's not, you clown. I live there. Stop with this BS lies about my small community.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77782766

You all probably should be thankful that people stay out of your town. Enjoy your small community and hopefully it will never become a craphole.

OH. MY. STARS.

Well it is no wonder why the vibe my brother and I got there as we passed through was dark and unwelcoming. Oh dear. I would never recommend anyone to stop there.

Stopped at a place back in the '80s where the inhabitants spoke Elizabethan English. Places where you know if your vehicle broke down you could be in trouble!

.... Oral Roberts University. I was sent there for work a few years back and the conference center I was at was right across from the university's huge statute of praying hands. If you've never seen that thing, google it. It's huge and creepy AF.
 Quoting: HONKYLIPS

I just googled those hands. Yes, they look odd. More like they're someone in distress begging, or making an illuminati pyramid hand sign.

Was working in a rural Kentucky town factory on a consulting contract. Had a black coworker. We worked late to finish the project and find an airport motel so we could get an early flight out in the AM. Got hungry, saw a bar open hoping to get something to eat.
Walked straight into a Nazi Party/ KKK meeting. Did an immediate about face and walked real fast back to the car.

Got a funny one. Having contracted and moved considerably in the engineering field, I traveled from New Mexico to Augusta Ga. Having pulled up to a gas station in the middle of the night there was an older gentleman sitting on a chair watching everything go by. He mumbled loud enough for me to hear, "Go back to your own country". lol I had New Mexico plates. He thought I was from Mexico. I'm as white bread as could be.

You know on those road trips where you pass by or stop at those little towns with like one diner/gas station/general store/etc. and you wonder who the hell actually lives there?

I would like to hear if anyone here has any bizarre or scary experiences passing through these places in their lives.

The only personal one I can think of off hand is a time when my buddy and I got stoned and were driving around and took a wrong exit off the freeway. Ended up down in this strange little community in a valley between some hills. Place seemed very odd and empty and a little too "perfect". We were wondering where the hell we were and what all these buildings and roads were doing in this little middle of nowhere place, we were also stoned and a little paranoid, and then we see people being driven around in these little trams like the type they have in the parking lots at Disneyland.

People just seemed blissfully unaware and staring off into space and we were like "WTF is this dude?? Is this some cult compound or what???" We turned our stoned asses around and drove out and got back on the freeway and out of there. Looked it up later and found out it was a place for mentally insane people to be rehabilitated and hopefully integrated back into society as some point. This little mini-town was all insane people and staff who work there and try to use it as a sort of "practice town". Still got some really weird energy driving around that place.

Jesus, this reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode I fell into somewhere in Pennsylvania (iirc).

I got lost just off the freeway somehow: I had been driving all night, it was about 3 or 4 in the morning.

I came down a little hill and found myself at a crosswalk in this very bizarre little town. The streets were packed: it was 3 AM, there wasn't a festival or anything going on, but there were dozens of people just milling aimlessly around: some of them stared oddly at me as I went by, it felt like many of these people were staring at my car.

I could see the interstate from where I was, I knew I was right next to it but I could not find my way up there somehow: none of the usual sensible solutions like onramps or frontage roads seemed to exist. I was driving around and around in this starey no-man's land with the insomniac horde, trying to find my way onto the interstate, and at some point I accidentally half-ran a red light.

A crowd of these night-wandering zombie people came up and surrounded my car. I was tired as fuck and half panicking, so I stayed where I was, and one of them walked up and snatched open my door: shocked, I looked up at him and his eyes were all black, like a crackhead's, that bizarre-looking dilated-pupil look that tells you a man's on his last med and probably more than half-rabid.

"Get out of the car," he barked, and behind him more of these scary people were shifting around and muttering. I stared at him, then without a second thought hit the gas: the car door came out of his hand, I ran the red light and got the fuck away from all of them as fast as I could.

I've seen some shit, you guys

Willow Creek California. It's about 30 miles east of Eureka. Lots of crazy inbreds, hostile Indians, methheads, potheads, trailer trash, and other subhuman trash.

Eureka is pretty creepy too. But Eureka seems downright nice and normal compared to Willow Creek.

I was traveling through the the back roads of WV and came into a little town with one diner.

I went in with my family, and although there were people seated and eating and counter help, not one person acknowledged our entry, we stood there and still noone even seemed to notice we were there, then we walked through the restuarant past all the people, I looked at the server, but even after choosing a booth and sitting 10 minutes noone acknowledged we were there AT ALL.

I was like is this the twilight zone?

we got up and left and noone said a word or seemed to notice, infact while we were in the place noone said a single word...there were like 10 people in there....

like we were ghosts in a ghost town.

Driving back from trip to beach a wreck on interstate caused us to have to take miles and miles of backroads. Foggy fall night. GPS just kept sending us down wild roads until we lost signal and gps wasn’t working but was to stay on this road for awhile anyway. Drove past the far outer part of a full blown military base and they was very active stuff going on, tons of people out, light everywhere, found it odd but just kept on going. 20 minutes later once gps started working again it started rerouting me again down backroads after backroads until finally brought me back to the interstate. We wanted to get home so bad we was just focused on the road but later I traced my path and could never find the first trace of a military base in that area. Mind blown because it was clearly a military base, troops everywhere, but online no sign on it and I couldn’t drive those backroads and take you back to it if my life depended on it. Would get lost to easy.

Re: Anyone here have any creepy "small town in the middle of nowhere" travel stories???
I have one. This was back in 2016. My friend and I wanted to find a Golden Corral all-you-can-eat buffet. I normally wouldn’t go to one of these as an adult but as a kid, my grandparents would take the whole family there or to Ponderosa if it was somebody’s birthday.

Anyway, my friend was from one of those third world asian countries, moved here as a teen. These people find the concept of Golden Corral fascinating and have a deep sentimental “love” for the place. So anyway, the closest Golden Corral in our area was about a 30 minute drive south of us, in a rural midwestern town.

It was a Saturday night, mid summer, and the place was hopping. Meaning there was a line out the door to get in. I knew immediately by sizing up the people waiting in the line that something was not quite right. Everyone looked like they were not from our era. Like very, very far removed from the year 2016, by at least thirty (30) years. I knew it wasn’t some kind of 80’s theme party because I could tell this was their identity. No one had cell phones. No detection of any modern clothes or hairstyles or makeup. Being seated was no different and became even more shocking. It was like being on the set of that movie Fast Times At Ridgemount High. Ever seen that movie? That’s the era we were in. I kept staring at people but they did not seem aware that anything was “off.” My friend and I asked one another jokingly if we’d stepped into another dimension. The servers- have you ever seen that tv show Mel’s Diner? That’s similar to how they appeared.

Anyway I’ve never forgotten that experience and how odd everything felt that night. I suspect we did somehow step into some sort of portal or parallel dimension.

Well, it wasn't exactly a town, but last year, my husband and I were driving through New Mexico on the way to Colorado and there was a stretch of probably 100 miles of just NOTHING. No small towns at all and only the occasional run down farmhouse or trailer. That wouldn't normally be that creepy, but we drove by 3 burned out cars on the side the road, all within about 20 miles of each other. Completely burned up...now how would that even happen??
