Walmart To Woo High Schoolers With Free SAT/ACT Prep Classes And Debt-Free College

The company is working with a Denver-based startup called Guild Education that offers a program costing a dollar a day at several non-profit universities with online programs that have had success working with adult learners.

It also said it's expanding the number of degrees beyond business and supply management to an additional 14 that will include cybersecurity and computer science.

Walmart says these programs will help provide workers with skills it needs in the future.

Eligible teens will be given more predictable and flexible work schedules, in addition to free test prep courses for the ACT and SAT. After completing high school, those workers will be available for Walmart’s $1 a day college education benefit.

Almost a year ago, Walmart launched its $1 a day college program for its 1.4 million associates now known as “Live Better U.” To date, more than 7,500 Walmart associates have enrolled in the program, which the company said is ahead of expectations.

In addition to earning $1 a day college, the program also offers discounts on master’s degrees, and the ability to finish high school for associates and eligible relatives.

I can see how some think this is a good idea but seriously, walmart has us from cradle (infant products) to grave (caskets and urns.) I find this repulsive and dangerous. I find that we allowed it to get this way absolutely terrifying.

Close examination of the programs’ design elements—focusing on employer and employee financial contributions, employer limits on programs of study, and employer limits on institutions—reveals that, despite what may be advertised, corporate education assistance programs do not meaningfully relieve financial constraints facing employees interested in pursuing a college degree.

These programs in fact limit the college and career choices for some of their employees.

"Will provide workers with skills IT needs in the future". The way I read this Walmart is training people to work at...Walmart. It's for Walmart's future...not yours.

I can imagine the tax breaks Walmart is getting for their "generosity".

The best way to educate yourself and have a great job is to attend a two year vocational college. Go to a local one where it's very cheap to attend. Try never to go into debt. Whether you become a carpenter, a plumber or a mechanic...this is the best way to get ahead in life.

A styrofoam company that I worked for in 1972 did similar.

They paid for your full-time college eduction (you had to get a degree that they chose - mostly Engineering.)
You just had to work for them for 4 years after getting the degree.

Every Utility that I worked for paid for college, but you had to go on your time. Many guys got engineering degrees that way.

For the last year or so a sign has been up at our Walmart. Free college classes. The local community college and others are pretty good. but online at least for IT is where its at. no way would I drive a car into the ground. been there done it.
