anyone ever eat bitter melon?
It apparently has some compound in it that mimics insulin and helps lower blood sugar. I got some for my dad the other day and we tried it yesterday. It claims to actually cure type 2 diabetes. I think you have to eat it with each meal but it also says be careful because your blood sugar can drop too low.

I didn't test his sugar after his meal yesterday because he started out at 93!!

It really doesn't taste too bitter for me or my dad. I crave bitter flavors and this isn't any more bitter than dandelion something I consume daily. My dad asked I put it in his juice and he drank it up like a champ. I am going to add this regularly to his juices.

there are recipes on how to cook it an you have to draw out the bitterness but it's very tolerable if you don't have a sweet tooth.

I just ate some raw with salt on it and I think it would be great fermented like kimchi or pickled. I'm going to put some in my olive juice, I like the olive juice flavor better than pickles.

Whatever you supplement that the body makes, will cause the body to make less of it.

Type II diabetes is caused by being a fat arse and eating shit. Intense exercise and proper diet cure it.

around here we are lucky to have broccoli lol. I've heard of bitter melon before but decided to do a quick search and while there is some proof that it can lower blood sugar, it can also cause you to go hypoglycemic and cause liver damage. Don't use it at all if you are child bearing woman, it can cause bleeding, contractions and abortion...yikes

Never heard it called melon before, and checked picture to see if it's what I thought it was... it was... lol

Iv'e never had it any other way besides pickled in a Indian type pickle.

They don't draw out the bitterness... they enhance it when it's pickled that way.

It's like a condiment so you don't eat big portions of it at a sitting... but put a spoonful next to your rice, or whatever... and blend, dip... as you go... So, good... YUMMY!

thanks! I'll look up some Indian pickling recipes. It occurred to me it would taste best pickled somehow. I've got some soaking in olive juice now. I bet a spicy pickled flavor will be delicious!

Bitter melon is a traditional summer dish in Chinese food.

I enjoy the flavor, it's definitely something different.

You can order it at Chinese restaurants.

The garbage the Chinese eat today is terrible.

Traditional, wholesome Chinese food, like what you get in Taiwan is amazing and very healthy for you. Tea, especially from Taiwan, is also one of the healthiest and most delicious things. A friend from Taiwan told me last weekend that once your are older than 40, you should only drink tea and water, not fruit juice or sweets.

The Chinese also like sweets quite a bit, a lot of candied fruits and things like hawthorne are very popular there.

Yep...its diet....I read an article about the extremely low incidence of breast cancer in Chinese women eating a traditional diet.....but the study say the cancer rates are on par with Americans after the 1st generation due to an americanized diet....
