The timeline of June 6, 1944:

Shortly after midnight, the bombings begin. More than 5,000 tons are dropped along the coast, from Le Havre to Cherbourg. It is impossible for the Germans to know where the landing will take place.

Between 1 am and 2:30 am, thousands of British and American parachutists are dropped on the coast.

2:30: Ranville, north of Caen, is taken by the Allies.

5:58 am: 5,000 American ships land on Omaha Beach and Utah Beach. The English and Canadians are focused on Juno, Gold and Sword Beach.

6:45 am: 34,000 men land on Omaha Beach, quickly renamed "The Bloody". 2,500 are killed or wounded.

7:30 am: 53,500 English soldiers sweep over at Gold and Sword Beach, 1,000 are killed or wounded. Shortly thereafter, 23,000 GIs arrive in Utah Beach. 200 are killed or injured.

In one day, more than 150,000 soldiers landed. There are 10,000 soldiers dead, wounded or missing.

Heads of State, crowned heads and veterans. Tens of thousands of people are expected on the beaches of Normandy, Calvados and the Channel to commemorate the event. Among them guests of note: a dozen heads of state and crowned heads, as well as 500 veterans, most all being centenarians.

The 11 am ceremony, at the Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery, near Omaha Beach (Calvados), will be particularly awaited. It will be co-chaired by the French president and his American counterpart in front of more than 10,000 people. It should last about 75 minutes including a flypast.

He was a Staff Sergeant & a medic. He got killed treating the wounded. I never knew him.

D day wouldn't be possible today with the internet and people's loose lips. We here on GLP would know all about the plans before it happened and we would end up causing the plans to be aborted because it wouldn't be a surprise. Hitler would still be in power if he had been leader of Germany today because nobody would want to go to war against him and there would be stalemate just like there is with other tyrannical nations.
