It's the GPS. A certain WAAS GPS receiver made by one of the major avionics companies (thousands of these units in the field on planes from 737's to corporate jets) has a software issue that caused them to go into a reboot loop on saturday night if they were receiving the satellites.

If you turn one of these on in view of the satellites, it will cause it to fail. This only applies to units with a particular dash number, other units of the same model with different dash numbers are unaffected. I work in aviation, and I have seen this in real time today.

Once failed, they stay failed, the manufacturer is working on a fix, but for the time being all planes with this receiver are limited to VOR navigation.

HUGE OUTBREAK OF NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS:

Were sighted in Europe as far down as Poland (at least) and the USA as far south as Oregon, Utah and California.
Normally, NLCs are confined to polar regions, but this year people are seeing them at middle latitudes, too.

The cause of their brightness: Solar minimum conditions are in effect now as the sun has been without spots for 22 consecutive days--a situation that may favor the frosting of meteor smoke high above Earth.
