Lance, one day Earth will evolve to the point that someone like you is president. Love your posts and thought processes. Thanks for sharing the wealth.

We are odd, aren't we? I've always been glad to be "different" and I know my neighbors are now looking at all my white icing buckets wondering what on earth I am doing. LOL Well, we make use of what we can, don't we?

I hope this thread goes on as long as GLP exists - and permaculture is definitely the way to go if you have that option. I do not, unfortunately.

As an aside, today my larger dog was in a state of excitement and managed to knock over both potato buckets, which I did not appreciate. However, I did get to see that the potatoes are rooting, which was a delight. Now if they just do not become upset about being uprooted, and go back to taking care of business as they were . . .

Loved your comment, Lance, about your long-lasting potato bed! Did they not develop diseases in that length of time in one place?

Have you, Lance, or anyone else here seen the newish information about "grounding" or "earthing"? As many of you know, I am disabled and have an illness called lupus, which is not a very good thing to h ave. All winter I am very ill, hardly moving. When spring arrives with warmer temps and longer days and one can get hands into dirt, I feel much better. Always attributed this to the longer days and ability to be outside [even though I must avoid sun] but having learned recently about "grounding", my mind is changing. It has to do with electricity, in ways I don't quite understand. I'll leave a link here about it in case others are interested. Basically, take off your shoes and get into grass, dirt, sand, and see what happens. It's produced miracles in some people! No place here to put my feet on anything nice, but all my planters and buckets and the bags of soil in my garage let my hands get into it all spring and summer! It may be healing!

Just now watching something Marfoogle posted tonight and it turns out the movie, whichis about to have a red carpet opening, is still being offered free. This video at about 12:28 offers it again. I recommend this to every single person on this thread and in the world, for that matter! It can change your life!

Re: Dandelions and Civilization (short vid)UPDATED pg 11 Dandelion and Spike Proteins
How to do a perennial potato bed (in Zone 8b Maritime anyhow). First you build a slightly raised bed. The soil is kind of irrelevant in this instance. Rocky/sandy/clay etc. Mine was only about 3 inches high. You are not growing in the soil. I then put down 2" of clean sand (this bed was 5'x 20').

I then added the seed potatoes of many sorts/varieties/cultivars etc. Next came 8" of mulch hay, an inch of fresh comfrey leaves and another inch of mulch hay. That was it. The mulch was added to whenever the bed looked to shrunken. I don't know how else to explain that.

And since I had a lot of mature comfrey (never go near it with a rototiller unless you want lots!), I added it during the 3 harvests a year I took from it. Not lots (it's high in nitrogen and potatoes are not heavy feeders), but it helps break down the hay, you could use straw I think but we do not have that locally.

That bed lasted 8 years until the bamboo guy that bought my acreage decided he wanted something else there...in 8 years it was never replanted, since it is easy to store potatoes here in my climate with a thick enough coating of mulch (in the fall you could use leaves and such as well if you are short on comfrey). The potatoes, though all the cultivars got mixed, and it was hit and miss what you find near each other when you reached under the mulch, were awesome.

Bonus, they only need a rinse since they are not growing in the soil, well they are but that is via fine root hairs. So the tubers stayed out of the soil, were very clean, had no scab etc. I didn't replace the sand at all either. The bed was just left as is. This method would have to modified for a different climate of course. Here the challenge is winter rains. I do live in a Temperate Rainforest afterall...but even when we had our 1-2 weeks of snow...the potatoes were snug under their mulch.

Garden smarter, not harder! Cheerio!

Smarter not harder indeed! I'm all for it!

I've grown potatoes, an excellent crop, in nothing but grass clippings. Right now I put hay in the bottom of two buckets, added a little soil, placed the seed potatoes, added just a little soil, and placed semi-rotted hay on that. One of my girls dumped the buckets yesterday with her line, which was not my favorite part of the day, so I had to pick them up and replace in the buckets, hoping the disruption did not change their minds about growing. The happiness was the roots growing out of the bottoms of the potato pieces. Hope they continue and do well.

Potatoes are not difficult nor fussy to grow. They are calorie-dense, meaning we will really need these when our diets are less varied and less dense with nutrients and calories. Give it a try - I would even, if salt-free sand were available, grow a bucket of potatoes in nothing but sand - I think it would work well! Remember that you just keep adding material as the plants grow upward. I will be tucking more hay around mine. Add the clippings or whatever you have by tucking densely all around the plants but keep the leaves uncovered. Potatoes will continue to grow upward. At harvest time, lay the bucket on its side and shake out the potatoes. Simple harvest. Let surface of potatoes dry, brush off whatever you grew them in, and store. Of course save whatever you grew them in to grow something else in next year!

Everyone not reading this thread is missing something they could be doing to grow something of their own, and in some cases they could be growing nearly all the vegetables for their families and even to trade with neighbors. Everybody can do something. Everybody has dandelions nearby - what a sadness to miss this thread about using them!

What a shame to miss this thread!

If you have property, and keep chickens, plant lots of Illinois Everbearing Mulberries...they will feed a lot of hens over the fruiting period which is very long. I dunno my perennial/foraged chicken foods list can get quite long. But since I'm doing this for Pooka, is it worthwhile? I could go from Zone to Zone really but really...

It is a brilliant resource though you won't find data on using the plants for animal fodder because they are vegans. So extrapolate and just know that if a wild bird can eat it your hens can.

Opiates and civilization...
I do not know what the rules are here posting data like this because I do not normally do such things. But preppers are looking at wild lettuce as a pain reliever? Seriously?

What you want to do, is find a seed seller (the seeds are NOT illegal in the US nor Canada) who can provide Turkish white and perhaps has Tasmanian Blue. The Turkish white is bred for morphine production, the Tasmanian Blue (bet you didn't know that Tasmania provides most of the worlds codeine?) for codeine.

You find a barren space, you sew both of those then after they have crossed you introduce 'hens and chicks' papavers to that field the next year. Both the white and the blue are single headed and you do not want that. So in your third year you will have a cross of all three cultivars. High in pain killers.

You save a few of the larger pods of the now-multiheaded plants and you harvest the unripe ones and do a simple vinegar extraction (Ie soak and blend the pods in vinegar so it becomes a paste), then put the paste out in the sun to sun-bake the vinegar off. It tastes like crap, but it works and I'm allergic to all opiates aside from the raw form.

If you want a plant to be able to use after a, a, 'an event', papaver somniferum is a good one to get to know beforehand. And the end product will be worth it's weight in gold if it all goes doo-lalley. If you have ever seen a loved one in pain and wished you had the skill sets to do something about it other then put your loved one out of their misery you will know what I am talking about.

This wild lettuce BS on survival threads is ludicrous and I doubt one person has actually tried it for the most part. I have, it sucks. 1000000x weaker then the humble poppy extract.

Nothing to be done about that kind - they will do whatever they will do.

You are so kind to do this thread for me - but really - please don't! LOL I feel badly because I know you don't have a lot of time to spare.

This is a wonderful idea for feeding chickens! People can find out what zones are appropriate by doing their own fast research. Not necessary for you to spoonfeed here. Those who want the information will find it quickly enough. Those who want to be fed by spoon won't use the information anyway!

I'll move on then...lol
Cannabis and Civilization

Many people get confused by the so-called 'difference' between hemp and 'marijuana'. In Latin taxonomy they are the same plant. The nomenclature gets confusing but in reality there are 3 forms of cannabis/hemp/marijuana.

Cannabis indica, short stocky growth and known for a 'couch lock' high if you smoke it but also for seed production because it was more easily harvestable then it's sibling, cannabis sativa. Cannabis sativa is known for it's growth structure as being tall and lanky and would be bred for a cerebral high or for pulp and cordage and what have you.

Both of these have been crossed over with cannabis ruderalis which comes from Northern climes so it has a unique ability to 'auto-flower'. The auto-flowering gene gets translated to both other sisters when crossed. SO you can take a long flowering plant of either sativa or indica and make it flower in a shorter period.

All the rage right now seems to be CBD but cannabis has a few hundred cannabinoids. So, if it is permissible where you are, gets various seeds and look for the flowering parameters for your climate. Since this is a 'post world as we know it' discussion. Just plant them. And as far as it goes you can just broadcast seed them and let them go feral (there is feral cannabis all over the US).

You then can strip the seeds off of the most productive plants in your patch. Save those for next year. Once you have taken all the seed, you can include the male and female 'buds' and macerate them and then slowly simmer them in moonshine (don't listen to the people who think industrial solvents is the way to go) and then strain when it becomes a goo, add a bit more ethanol. Viola an unknown cannabinoid mixture that will contain CBD/THC/CBN (the best painkiller is CBN) you can store forever as a tincture.

handy in a scenario when medicines, or meta-sins as I call them, are not available. I have seen myself diabetics go off insulin for the first time in 40 years using this recipe. How many diabetics do you know and how much insulin can your store? Simple, effective plant medications.

America was built on Cannabis, the British Empire was built on cannabis. Why is it illegal? They don't want what comes next to happen. Praise POTUS for leaving hemp production up to the States and legalizing it federally.

I think that is enough for today.

Thank you for all this! My question, having had it for some time, is - Does the hemp plant also contain all the compounds? Will hemp give a person a "couch high"? If so, how can it have been legalized for production here, irrespective of states that now allow marijuana sales?

 Quoting: Pooka

It depends on the cultivar...hemp was legalized within certain parameters...so probably not. Where as 'marijuana' will. I hate using slang for plants because it becomes a muddle!

Re: Dandelions and Civilization (short vid)UPDATED pg 11 Dandelion and Spike Proteins
I'm not sure if there is much of a point carrying on this thread. But I will add this because when my son was 4 and I lived remote, he cut his finger to the bone. Stabbing paintballs on the porch for no apparent reason. With family who keep their knives sharp.

So we had no phone, he was screaming, and a grabbed some H2O2, doused his finger and said 'look son, can see your bone'....probably a bad thing to say but I don't really falter so whatever, he's 18+ and remembers it with a giggle...

I took his finger, wrapped in a elastic band that came of a cauliflower bunch from the store (the blue, thick ones) and that cut off the blood flow to his finger for a bit so I applied this [link to www.medicinehunter.com] Of which I had a lot. Well, then next day after I had slowly unwrapped his elastic band his wound was visible but not bleeding.

15 years later...it is not even visible at all. I was going to write on another thing (since most of us can not grow that plant), kudzu and related plants but there is a very small echo chamber here so what is the point?

NIce details on the rubber banded owie!

Lance, do you want to give up? I wonder about changing the title - maybe nobody was into dandelions?

Because you made the thread for me, I feel terrible, and don't want to see it let go, but it really is up to you. I feel you have a lot to share and I would love to see it, but if you don't think people will catch on, I get it.

Do you have dragon's blood trees? Or is it something you keep in an herbal cabinet? The tree looks very much like a birch.

The tree is 3rd growth Amazonian...out of my league. You keep it (alot of it) in your herbal cabinet. The pharmies are trying to take it over...go figure. As far as the thread goes if it just keeps getting bumped on prepper threads, I'll keep posting! Kudzu tomorrow would be a hoot...so many hate the plants they might need...There are a few interviews, 2 hours long each I want to tack on so we shall see.

I've not forgotten this thread. It could be epic if people cared and chimed in more from different climatic zones so it would not just be me spouting off! Everyone has a unique perspective on what they can grow and why it is good!

I'd not heard of dragon's blood - excellent information!

I did indeed post this thread on that thread, and will do so again in a few days. Problem is, lots of people take the summer more off than on the internet, so the timing is against us in both places.

Hope you will continue because eventually people will discover the thread, somewhere down the line, and it will become very popular as people realize their need for the information.

By the way - my potatoes came up yesterday in the one of the two buckets of them, and this is after one of my dogs dumped them both out on Monday! Celebration!

Great post. I have used wild lettuce capsules for insomnia and found it worked very well for that purpose.

There is a book about growing and harvesting poppies

Opium for the Masses

And some other titles on the same subject that come up in the suggested titles when you search on that one.

Amazon is good for reading book reviews and I've certainly bought plenty of books there but lately I've been using Alibris more for buying used books, and ebay too from time to time. ABEbooks is owned by Amazon so you're not really getting away from Amazon if you use ABE.

You do real-eyes that the statement in bold is the essence of Q correct? The group collecting and sharing of data. Think on that since we disagree. NOne of us give a crap who Q is, we built a library (that is being stored offline). Just as we could build a library with this thread.

I could lead people to all sorts of forums and what not that babble on about what they think about stuff via permaculture but I will not. When the mood hits me, and you bump this thread now and then so I remember, I'll keep adding so GLP has a library of functionality built into it.

I could repost my stuff from under lancifer93, lancifer etc but I'd rather start fresh...I wish I would have saved my older posts as an AC. SO that being said...kudzu, quinoa and amaranth, three plants easily combined for tomorrow or the next day.

Our house had beautiful green sod grass when we bought it. We do NOT use any pesticides or chemicals on our property, and now we have what I call, "Some Grass" and "But Grass". But Grass is everything else is growing But Grass. ;)
