Kudzu hey...for those of you in the South East that are blessed enough to have with not enough brain cells to recognize the gift of it....Here it is

Root - cooked[105, 171]. Rich in starch[109]. The root can be up to 1.8 metres long[174] and has been known to weigh 35 kilos or more[269]. The root contains about 10% starch, this can be extracted and used as a crispy coating in deep fried foods, or for thickening soups etc[174, 183]. It can also be made into noodles, or like agar or gelatine is used as a gelling agent for salads[183]. This plant is a staple food in Japan, the peeled root contains about 2.1% protein, 0.1% fat, 27.1% carbohydrate, 1.4% ash[179]. The starch of the roots contains (per 100 g) 340 calories, 16.5 percent moisture, 0.2 g protein, 0.1 g fat, 83.1 g total carbohydrate, 0.1 g ash, 35 mg Ca, 18 mg P, 2.0 mg Fe, and 2 mg Na[269]. A nutritional analysis for the whole root is available. Flowers - cooked or made into pickles[183]. Stems and young leaves - raw or cooked[105]. A very nutritious food, the fresh young shoots taste like a cross between a bean and a pea[183]. The cooked leaves contain (per 100 g) 36 calories, 89.0 percent moisture, 0.4 g protein, 0.1 g fat, 9.7 g total carbohydrate. 7.7 g fiber, 0.8 fat, 34 mg Ca, 20 mg P, 4.9 mg Fe, 0.03 mg thiamin, 0.91 mg riboflavin, 0.8 mg niacin[269].

Love this post! I have been in the south and seen buildings and trees and all kinds of things covered with it, and was told it could totally cover a building in some incredibly short time like a week or three days or something.

Hope southern people know, as SHTF very soon, that they have a wonderful edible resource right there! When food is almost unaffordable this fall and winter - they can be digging up dinner for free!

Good thread. I thought I was the only one who liked dandelions. They look really nice next to violets. I have a nice crop of clover too. :)

If you pick stinging nettle the correct way, fold the surface of the leaf. Leave the stings below you can simply make a wad of the leaf and you do not get stung. This is a very good plant to get to know. Like dandelions, it is a very early spring green. It has many uses as the link will show you.

Patches here are cherished and most people with them keep them quiet. I know one behind a school and pick it yearly. Shhhhh....this is a very good plant to get to know. I haven't gotten into famine food plants yet, because I don't want to. This is a thrival food. As it ages you can then combine it with any weed you might find. I like comfrey and dock along with whatever you have. Nutrient dense.

I can't go there...sorry...it would be like me (with a very indepth mycological knowledge) ID'ing a mushroom on line. You have to buy books on what it is around you. I can say, same family...that is about that. Dandelions take on many forms.

Are there "foe" dandelions? I suppose that's what I was asking early in the thread when I asked Lance for a way to differentiate so many dandelions, but I had only thought of not very good to eat, not possibly worse.

Lance, what reference, preferably online rather than a book, will tell us the different dandelions?

I'd need USDA Garden Zone and general locale which many do not want to give for good reason.

Just below here you posted a video about making a water heater in a rocket stove - that kind of knowledge bowls me over - you have so much information!!

Let this thread live long and prosper, please. We can take turns green pinning it on days when the news isn't everyone's major focus, because many will want this knowledge, and some of them will be able to add to it.

This thread is as important as one on preparing, or one on ebola, or any other thread that will give us information we need for survival in case TSHTF, and to make life better during normal times!!

There is another thread today about the coming famine due to flooding preventing planting of so incredibly many acres of farmland. There is laughter, nay-saying, stupidity going on, as usual.

Now, if you add a dollop or two for a 55 gallon drum and use an aquarium 'bubbler stone' in overnight in summer you will notice it might froth over. That is what you want....crickey it's been a decade or more so my numbers are off prolly....but just chuck in what you have on hand...if you have a decent electric drill and one of those metal paint stirrer attachments...turn it into a slurry, with the molasses in it, and let it sit until the foaming stops, then (forget the article) apply directly to the soil.

Remember the purpose of fertilizers is to feed the soil and not the plants. SO depending on where you are, you would use more or less molasses. Here, in 55 gallons we used a few 'dollops' (hicks here hey, like grannies cook book...wtf is a pinch?) and wild yeasts will go for the sugar and the bubbler helps as well. Then you can just scoop the stuff up and feed it around the plants. I know the article is more about foliar feeding but in all reality. Put it on the soil around the plants.

Or, if you are repotting a plant, mix it direct into the soil. Try and use perlite in plant pots...oxygen is very important to the root structure. SO do a 1/4 perlite, 3/4 soil blend and alot a certain amount of the tea per pot. The surface root structure of most annuals is built ina way that the main roots go down and look for water while the surface are more looking for feed.

This is different in perennials to a certain extent. Hence comfrey brings up nutrients etc, but that is to feed itself next season when the leaves wither and fall into the soil around them. They are still going for water, and are mining for nutrients for next year.

Tomatoes...not so much...they are going for water below and nutrient above. With growing cannabis, which I have done for a long time, we add our (non-organic, alas) nutrient into the watering system itself. But that was large scale. But we did top dress with guano, so it became slow release...It did add flavour and savour to the plants.

From where do you source guano? Do you have a local supplier from caves up there? Or are you importing from Mexico? I'd love a local supplier, but the cost no doubt is prohibitive. On the other hand, if only I knew someone with rabbits - such good stuff they produce, and in such amazing volumes! LOL

The Sunshine Coast was (maybe not anymore) the densest of cannabis grower per population in the world...so we have lots of shops...and I know everybody. Oh, rabbits...I'll remember rabbits and tilapia...tied in with aquaponics...that was an older (7 years ago) brain fart of mine...That's a good one if you tie it in with a greenhouse...but that is for later...
