Here's how to grow celery from a store-purchased stock. Indoor plant in colder zones, outside in temperate. Never have to buy a big stalk of celery to use a small amount in a recipe, again!

[link to www.17apart.com (secure)]
 Quoting: Pooka

If you are using it in a stew or something...do not blanch it. The flavour is way stronger (like lovage) in simply grown celery and since it wasn't deprived of the sun by covering by whichever method it is far more nutrient dense. So the small stalk you use is worth 10 store bought stalks for flavour and savour.
 Quoting: Lance Roseman From BC

Excellent to know it is more nutrient dense! This we will surely need!

Thanks, Lance - good information!

So recently I posted a video and talked about regrowing celery from a stalk from the store.

I cut the stalk and planted it and the very next day I could see a change in the center of the stalk - a bit greener. That's less than a week ago and today I can recognize celery leaves coming up from the center - this is amazing!

The speed at which it is growing is remarkable and this, coupled with what Lance said about extra flavor and nutrition, make this one a no-brainer! Even if you don't want the celery right now, buy one and plant the end for future reference - then you will have your own even if none in stores.

Thanks OP. It is truly clown world to me when I see people spraying toxic carcinogens all over their yard to eradicate this highly useful edible and medicinal plant. Also dandelion is good for honey bees.

Lawns are totally moronic. Did you know that the way Cubans have managed to survive their communist regime is by small scale agriculture? That is what should happen.

Everyone who owns property should have a garden. They could produce at least one season of vegetables, herbs, and fruits. Most could grow tree crops of nuts and fruits. There would be tremendous savings.

Be careful on wild edibles including invasive nonative species that our ancestors brought over. Many have high amounts of oxalic acid and eating too much contributes to kidney stones. Similarly, the practice of eating salad should be perfectly fine, but many Americans are now having digestion issues like irritable bowel syndrome due to stress. They have poor coping skills and so this adversely affects the mucosal coating of the bowel.

That can easily be taken care of by slippery elm tea. That old standby is what should be used when you have this or sore throats. Nothing else works as well.

Most treatment just anesthetizes which is plumb silly as the issue is a lack of slippery coating.

Nonsense. I was merely pointing out these plants came from the Old Country as they were veggies eaten there, then since their descendants don't see them as veggies, they grew wild.

I probably posted when I ordered a comfrey root a couple weeks ago, or when I received and planted it. Yesterday I discovered it is already coming up! Comfrey is good for more things than a person can list in one place! Feed it to livestock. Wrap an injury with it. Use it as mulch. Incredible stuff!

Celery is coming up so quickly I could probably hear it grow if I put my ear next to it! This is totally gratifying - I do hope it grows equally well in the house when the weather changes.

Any comments on housing celery, Lance?

Common plantain is soldier's herb used by the Romans but is an invasive nonnative species in America. And the Native Americans called it White Man's Foot as whereveer the settlers went, the seeds got left behind and it spread everywhere. Every meadow east of the Mississippi River has soldier's herb.

Now that is like a 2 on the healing scale but easily identifable even by kiddos and ubiquitous.

But comfrey is a 10 but has to typically be cultivated. Old farms will have a neglected herb patch and that is usually found there.

Chichory is the same way as French settlers brought it over and it once was grown on purpose to stretch expensive coffee so it lasted longer yet had a robust taste. Now those distinctive blue flowers are in most meadows and along roads.

Some of these plants like chichory were used by sheep herders to spin wool yarn and then dye it. Chichory makes a brown color. Walnut husks made a very black dye. Something as simple as red onion skins can be utilized.

Yes. A rather older friend of mine, 66, fell off a ladder and broke his hip '9 months to heal' said his Dr...I had him limping along just fine at 3. the dr asked 'how did you do this?' and he said (for the 3rd time) 'You have to ask my witchdoctor Lance'...and the Dr was not interested at all.

I still don' have a kb of merit so can not wrie long missives...butt I have lots more to share...another few more days. And I don' have o peck at my screen...
