I tried growing them out here, but our winters aren't cold enough.

We are Zone 8b here, but the trees are planted in Zone 9 (USDA ZONE usage here) and I have not been back to that spot for a very long time aside from driving by and a quick pop in to check on my bamboo (they 'store my genetics' for me).
