Re: Hong Kong protests: Panic spreads as riot officers fire tear gas
I have mixed feelings. On one hand, the HK people want freedom. That's good.

On the other hand, they never won their freedom. The "freedom" they remember in their past was having been captured by the Brits back in the 1840's and then run as a colony of Britain. Britain had a governor in HK and absolutely had control there for 150 years.

Then China took it back in 1997, the "handover". All negotiated between Britain and China. What about HK? Just an object, not a player at the table.

At no time did the HK people do anything brave or clever or successful to kick anyone out and win their freedom. Everyone wants to pretend they're America but very few do what America did (with France's help -- it wasn't just about bravery, but clever politics too.)

HK's economy will decline because as China builds the Belt and Road, the hub is Shanghai and it goes a little bit south of there. It doesn't even touch Hong Kong.

But what does Hong Kong expect? They're so independent, right? Let them build their own trade network. Not gonna happen, they never build things.

"police are brutal and have betrayed our people"

well not all that brutal, they don't have guns apparently. But they do throw people around and kick and move them out of the way. Tempers are high on both sides.

They don't work for the HK people. HK never won its freedom. And if this sort of protest is how they intend to win their freedom, it's never been done so easily and childishly in the history of the world. They're pretending they're brave freedom fighters, but actually it's pointless.

The Chinese military has been in HK since they marched in in late June 1997 ahead of the handover. China runs the place. They've granted a "high degree of autonomy" until 2047, a phrase that means whatever China decides that it means. That was the deal the UK was able to get for them as they left.

It was a part of China before 1847 and it's been a part of China since 1997. And in between it was a territory of the UK.
