Anyways....China grew rapidly into capitalism or whatever you want to call it...they did it in a generation.....yet they didn't go through some of the growing pains a typical capitalist country goes through.....remember unions, and strikes and riots in the USA in the early part of the 20th century that led to some sort of worker reforms and a social compact between employee and employers....environmentL controls, etc etc....China never went through that.....apparently there are protests and crackdowns inland that happen all the time that never get reported....

Many view China as a centralized well oiled machine..but it isn't....it can easily be fractured and split into large factions that will cause problems for other countries that border it.....

The lease was 150 years on Kowloon, 1847 - 1997. It was handed back on schedule. The Chinese troops actually did march into Kowloon a week or two ahead of the handover.

The Island (and all the rest of the islands there, which are many, including Lantau where the airport now is) was surrendered back because it had been captured by the Brits rather than leased. But they were indefensible anyway. China had become a superior military force to Britain.

How long would the USA allow the Mall in DC (which is not as central or important as Tiananmen Square) be occupied. See: "bonus march". Or even Waco -- we won't even allow an open field in Texas to be occupied.

Not only do I remember it. I've been to speeches by two of the leaders of it, including Wang Dan who is a pussy and wouldn't take questions from people who might know something. Both he and the other one (a woman who wasn't as famous but also an organizer of it) are the usual leftist SJW crybully types.

I've made quite a bit of fun of the HK people -- all richly deserved -- but the current government of China under Xi Jinping is truly scary. Informed people are afraid he's another Mao Zedong.

Nevertheless, the fate of HK is an internal Chinese matter. Just like the fate of Texas and California are US matters -- not for China and not for Mexico.

For now.

The only thing that has kept Hong Kong from being squashed like a bug already, is their economy. If the riots go on, Mainland China will set that aside, and Hong Kong will never be the same. (The Credit Scoring system, used on the Mainland will be applied to Hong Kong, to keep them in line.)
