Two New York City rabbis die of coronavirus

Two New York City rabbis have died of coronavirus.

Rabbi Romi Cohn of Staten Island, a 92-year-old and Holocaust survivor
who had fought as a partisan in World War II, succumbed to the disease,
the website The Yeshiva World reported.

Cohn was also a mohel who performed thousands of circumcisions free of charge
and trained hundreds of mohels himself.
He gave the opening prayer at the House of Representatives
in January on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Rabbi Yaakov Meltzer of Queens also died as a result of complications
from the virus, The Yeshiva World reported.

Meltzer, 60, was also a physician assistant and was a member of the Queens Hatzolah,
the local J^wish volunteer paramedic organization, for 35 years,
according to Yeshiva World.
Family members told the organization that Meltzer also had a heart condition. ...

EU to provide millions in coronavirus aid
to Iran despite US sanctions

The European Union will provide 20 million euros in aid to sanctions-hit Iran,
which is struggling to cope with a major coronavirus epidemic
which has swept through the country.

Iran has been hit hard by the outbreak of coronavirus with more than
23,000 cases in the country and 1,812 deaths that have piled pressure
on its already resource-depleted health services.

Tehran has appealed to the international community to ignore
US sanctions on the country, which it claims is creating
a humanitarian crisis in Iran, and send aid.

On Monday, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the body would
come to Iran's help and also support Tehran's request for IMF assistance.

"We've not been able to provide a lot of humanitarian help but there is
some 20 million euros in the pipeline ... that we expect to be delivered
over the next weeks," Borrell said, according to Reuters.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet Taliban officials in Qatar on Monday
on his way back from a one-day trip to Afghanistan as part of efforts to salvage
a historic deal signed with the armed group in February.

Pompeo will hold the highest-level talks ever between the United States
and the Taliban, the US State Department said.

"Secretary Pompeo is going to meet with Taliban officials in Doha including Mullah Baradar,
Taliban's chief negotiator, to press the Taliban to continue to comply with
the agreement signed last month," said State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus.

As part of the deal with the US, the Taliban is demanding the release of
all its prisoners held by the Afghan government, which has been reluctant to follow through.

He visited Ghani at his palace before meeting Abdullah, both of whom say they are Afghanistan's rightful leader following a disputed presidential election in September.

Their standoff has stalled the selection of a negotiating team to represent the Afghan government in planned talks with the Taliban.

US government threatens families of Int’l Criminal Court staff
if they try Americans for war crimes

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has threatened the family members of
International Criminal Court staff, vowing that Washington will take
punitive action against them if the court tries American soldiers for war crimes.

Pompeo also announced an intensification of unilateral US sanctions on Iran and Syria,
which are illegal under international law, and which are undermining
the countries’ attempts to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

In March 2019, the Pompeo State Department threatened to revoke or deny visas to
any International Criminal Court (ICC) personnel
investigating crimes committed by American forces.

A year later, on March 5, 2020, the ICC took a defiant step forward,
officially approving an investigation into allegations of war crimes and
crimes against humanity committed by the US military and CIA in Afghanistan.

Pompeo responded by angrily condemning the court and its proceedings.
His broadside was an apparent attempt at discrediting the institution,
which the US government is not a party to.

Long history of US threatening multilateral institutions
This blatant US threat against the family members of International Criminal Court prosecutors
is part of a longer historical pattern of Washington attacking multilateral institutions.

At the beginning of the George W. Bush administration’s so-called war on terror, in 2002,
the US Congress passed a bill called the American Service-Members’
Protection Act — more commonly known as the “Hague Invasion Act.”

This unprecedented piece of legislation, which has no precedent anywhere else in the world,
declares that the US government unilaterally grants itself the right to militarily invade the Hague
if a citizen of the United States or any allied country is tried at the court.

Nor are Secretary of State Pompeo’s threats the first time US government officials
have targeted the family members of international organizations.

José Bustani, the former director of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW),
said hardline neoconservative John Bolton,
a former under secretary of state for George W. Bush and national security adviser for Donald Trump,
threatened him and his family when Bustani negotiated with the Iraqi government to allow in OPCW weapons inspectors.

“You have 24 hours to leave the organization, and if you don’t comply with this decision by Washington, we have ways to retaliate against you,” Bolton reportedly told Bustani, according to his recollection. “We know where your kids live. You have two sons in New York."
