Update: Another Dominican Republic death: Retired Ohio police officer died while traveling with wife, family says
Another American has died during a stay in the Dominican Republic, this time a retired police officer who died earlier this year, according to family.

Thomas Jerome "Jerry" Curran was a 78-year-old from Bedford, Ohio, according to his family. He passed away on January 26, 2019, while traveling with his wife, Janet, ABC News reports.

The U.S. State Department confirmed on Wednesday that another death had been reported.

TV personality Melissa Rycroft has been ill since recently returning home from the Dominican Republic.

“She got an upset stomach on the second day of vacation, but it passed.

Once they came home, she got severe cramping,” the rep said. “It has lasted for over a week, and she’s currently getting tested for possible parasites and any other infections.

She’s assuming it’s something foodborne, but no one else in her family is ill.”

Dominican Republic tourist says flight was full of sick passengers

A Mississippi woman who went on a mother-daughter trip to the Dominican Republic says she fell ill — and, adding insult to injury, was stuck on a miserable return flight filled with passengers suffering from similar symptoms.

Tracy McCraw, of Madison, said she wasn’t the only one with flu-like symptoms on the plane home last month from her five-day trip to Punta Cana.

She said she arrived at the Royalton Punta Cana resort on May 21 for a trip to celebrate her daughter’s high school graduation with a group of other moms and daughters.

But after the first day, the mom became sick with a 102-degree fever and a stomach ache.

“It wasn’t like a stomach virus, and I’ve had the stomach virus and food poisoning before,” McCraw said.

California Man Reveals He Felt 'Sick Enough to Die' While on Dominican Republic Vacation

A Los Angeles man says he had a drink from his hotel room's minibar and quickly began to shiver and feel delirious like he was "in a dream"

Before the reception started, Duff and Gomez, 39, went back to their room for a few drinks, which they grabbed from the minibar, he says. He had rum, and his husband had tequila.
During their friend’s reception, he began to feel chills and feverish. It was enough for him to excuse himself from the celebration and return to his room.

“I started feeling delirious like I was in a dream,” he says. “I was really scared.”

He called the resort’s physician who told him, “You look really bad,” he recalls.

She thought Duff might have a tropical disease and urged him to take a taxi — there are no ambulances, he says — to the nearest emergency room.

Woman says husband died in Dominican Republic last year, similar to recent deaths of Americans there

Dawn McCoy was preparing to mark the one year anniversary of her husband David Harrison’s death on July 14th in the Dominican Republic because she feels his spirit is there.

Now, she’s canceled her trip because she was shocked to hear about the recent deaths of three other Americans in the country.

McCoy’s husband’s autopsy also blames pulmonary edema but references a heart attack as well.

“He just kept saying he didn’t feel right... he didn’t feel good,” said McCoy.

McCoy says her husband, who was just 45 years old when he died, was in good health, but after feeling sick one night he woke up early in the morning unable to breathe.

She says she called repeatedly for an ambulance but says they would only call for a doctor and it took more than 20 minutes.

McCoy says she’s not surprised — she stayed at a different resort but says in all it cost $20,000 dollars to get her husband home.

“The hotel doctor costed almost $3,000 and they would not let us check out until I paid that,” said McCoy. “It’s like a scab reopened.”

No, the Dominican Republic hasn't suddenly become more dangerous

Early Sunday, Skylar Martin of Hanover, Virginia, was taken to the hospital after she spent six miserable hours in her room and lost consciousness at a resort in the Dominican Republic.

Martin and her husband were married last month, and they were in the country on their honeymoon.

"I had a fever," Martin told NBC affiliate WWBT of Richmond, Virginia. "I was in and out of consciousness for a while. I would wake up to vomit. My body would wake itself up to get more out."

She said doctors in the Dominican Republic speculated that it might have been a blood infection, but the exact cause of her illness is still unknown.

The CDC, meanwhile, warns would-be tourists that drinking the country's tap water can open them to risk of hepatitis A, typhoid and cholera. The agency is currently warning travelers about an increase in report of rabies in Punta Cana; last year, the Zika virus was a big concern.

The non-profit International Association for Medical Assistance to Travellers even devotes a section on its website to "travelers' diarrhea" in the Dominican Republic.

It must be inclusive at some places and very easy to tamper with

Bootleg liquor eyed as cause of Dominican Republic tourist deaths

Cops are investigating whether at least seven tourists who mysteriously died in the Dominican Republic were poisoned by counterfeit booze, The Post has learned.

Officials want to know who supplied the alcoholic beverages the victims drank in the minutes and hours before their deaths over the past year — and if the drinks had any dangerous chemicals in them, law enforcement sources said.

The FBI is assisting and will take blood samples from the dead back to its research center in Quantico, Va., a source said.

Methanol is a type of alcohol not safe for humans. It is regularly used as antifreeze.

“Adulterated alcohol is usually methanol added to alcohol or just plain methanol, which is very, very toxic,” Kobilinsky said.

I don't think this could all be booze, although some incidents might be. Sounds like a larger scale cause - something like Legionnaire's Disease perhaps? Or some other tropical disease perhaps yet undiscovered, but hopefully not contagious to the rest of us (don't forget - half that island is HAITI). Or possibly widespread pesticide poisoning as I've heard a lot of people mention how much spraying there was during their stay.

They try to limit the cause of something, localize or trivialize it, make it sound like an aberration, like alcohol from minibars, but this sounds more widespread.

I wonder if the native population of DR has been experiencing any widespread sickness. No one asks this.

Family members say Williams went to the Caribbean island to have elective procedures on Sunday, June 2nd.

After the operations, she suffered from blood clots and other complications. Williams died five days later.

Expert Says Deaths in the Dominican Republic Are ‘Very Strange’: ‘Something Is Very Wrong’

Investigators are trying to determine what has sickened and killed several American tourists in the island nation.

“It’s definitely very strange,” Reynold A. Panettieri Jr., a physician at Rutgers who specializes in toxicology and is not directly involved in the investigations, tells PEOPLE.

“Healthy people don’t just die.

And the couple dying at the same time certainly tips us off that something is very wrong.”
