The use of prisoners used to horrify me on so many levels and from so many perspectives.

First, it's a dangerous game putting the criminals in charge.

Some of the older domestic ones in the US were responsible for the bombing of government buildings - with people inside - via the Weather Underground, i.e. some of the first US domestic terrorists. Why the fuck would you want them in charge of what and who they were trying to bomb?

Then, it's essentially a "stay here and rot or do what we want" work release program - not entirely ethical, reeks of slavery.

I don't see how it is good for anyone involved, at all, on any level, from any angle.

It's not even good for the mindset of the citizens. They can feel something isn't right.

So, you've got -

Psychopaths with government access.
Known terrorists with government support and funding.
Exploitation of prisoners.
An unstable nation.

...and most people with their head stuck in the sand because no matter how much the politicians may seem corrupt, they still trust that their government wouldn't have gone that far or been that asinine.

I've had a lot of time to contemplate it over the years and a two of my theories behind "why" have been:


1. The department is actually patriotic at its core (or was) and didn't want to send upstanding US citizens into dangerous jobs, so risked foreign and domestic prisoners instead.

2. They're cost cutting in the department to feed their own addictions.

3. The country is broker than it appears and can't afford to pay people full price for dangerous jobs.

As someone in law once told me, indecision is a decision.
You're deciding to do nothing.

From my own experiences, I can tell you that nothing gets done unless you plan in advance, put your eggs in multiple baskets, and work your ass off on all of them until one reaches fruition, and then you just keep going, finding more baskets, more eggs, and working your ass off.

All that other stuff? Ignore it or defeat it.

That end of the school year feeling never goes away, no matter how long you've been working.

I feel it myself, everyone I supervise gets nearly unreliable at this time of the year. Even the clients fade a bit.

I think the same logic holds true when it comes to information obtained by torture. Really not the best route

Or information obtained with hypnotics, for that matter.

In both cases, they're going to tell you what you want to hear.

Either a) to make the pain stop or b) because they're so drugged that they want to give you what you want to hear and reality plays no part in what that might be.

Life as fugitive, capture, trial and imprisonment[edit]

Fine was eventually captured in San Rafael, California on January 7, 1976. On June 8, 1976, he pleaded guilty to two felonies in federal district court: conspiracy and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. On the same day, he also pleaded guilty in Dane County Wisconsin Circuit Court to charges of destruction of property and to murder in the third degree for causing the death of Robert Fassnacht.

He was sentenced to a total of seven years in prison on the federal charges and received a sentence in the state court of seven years; the two sentences were to run concurrently. Fine was paroled on August 15, 1979, and remained on parole for approximately three additional years.[1]

After his release, he earned a college degree at the University of Delaware and a J.D. degree at the University of Oregon.[2] In 1984,[3] after passing the Oregon Bar exam, Fine was denied admission to the Bar on the grounds that "he had failed to show good moral character." He has not shown himself to be a credible person and did not establish that he now has the good moral character required to practice law. We base our decision on applicant's present statements about his past acts. We recognize that persons can and do reform. However, in this case applicant's deceitful, self-serving conduct persisted at the time of the hearing (appealing his denial of admission).[1]

As of October 2014, Fine is married and works as a law clerk at Chernoff Vilhauer LLP in Portland, Oregon.[2]

The rest got off on "technicalities" - I'm sorry, but when you bomb federal buildings there are no technicalities.

And then went on to lives so sketchy and classic CIA/Cointel that there's no other comparison.

I was reading through the CIA declassified docs, "The Family Jewels" and others, and they straight admit to recruiting a female from the Weather Underground bombing of the pentagon.

It made it into their brag book because she was female and the agency wanted to highlight how equal opportunity they've been.
