Re: Iran claims to have downed a Global Hawk UAV over Iran.
The reason the Iranians shot down this particular drone is simple:

1) It has the ability to use radar to track the movements of all ships and small craft in the Straights of Hormuz.

Taking it out prevents the US or anyone else for that matter to track Iranian attacks before they happen.

2) it is a prelude to the war Iran wants with the US.

Anyone that says that Iran doesn't want a war has not been listening to Iran's leadership. They believe that not only will there be a war but that they will win because in 2002 a US Marine General was able to beat the US with mock Iranian forces in war games.

Iran will call this a defensive measure, according to Islamic law US cannot operate in their territory. Iran renewed their claim of the Straight last week.

Guessing that would not be a problem. There are like 60+ more of these drones so they can still use the ground system elsewhere. Or maybe they will just send another drone in and use the same ground system. Who really knows though. One thing is for sure - it was a big and powerful drone and is quite a loss, and probably quite an unexpected loss at that.

Anyway, turns out the Iranians did down a US drone.

It just wasn't Global Hawk.

Every dog has its day.

It was over int'l airspace, not Iran.

Navy version of the global hawk. Very few, very expensive.

They brought this in a few days ago as part of the build up.
