Observed pulsars are seen as pulsating radio sources flashing on and off more than a dozen times per second, regularly. No star or white dwarf could do that ordinarily. It suggests presence of a rotating object emitting on each revolution. Astronomers concluded the radio emissions from a pulsar were in the form of a beam.
