well it was a large spherical explosion of shrapnel rather than a direct impact, so i would guess it just exploded luckily in the vicinity of the drone not the manned plane.

Where did you hear that it wasn't a direct hit to the drone? Iran is showing pictures of pretty small pieces of the drone that were recovered. The US hasn't seemed concerned that Iran has all the highly classified military tech, probably including the hard drives, etc. Wouldn't the US have tried to retrieve the drone if it wasn't a direct hit?
