Have an old car? You’re not alone. Vehicle age hits record
DETROIT (AP) — The average age of cars and trucks in the U.S. has hit a record 11.8 years, as better quality and technology allows people to keep them on the road longer.

The 2019 figures from data provider IHS Markit show that the rate of increase is slowing, but the average age is still expected to go over 12 years early in the next decade. The average age is up 0.1 years from 2018.

My pickup is 14 years old with 60k miles on it. It got recalled for a frame issue about 4 years ago. The dealer basically rebuilt the truck around a brand new frame - I'm hoping for another 14 years out of it!

Fuck this auto industry scam - like a hamster wheel, every few years you are expected to renew your debt slavery to get a new self-propelled slave coach to haul your meat sack to your wage-slave job to pay for the goddam thing and all the other bullshit.

Maybe the article is an indication of people waking up to this.

Exactly that

Why bother

I don’t need a second mortgage to drive a damn car

Paid 70k for my house

Nice cars cost the same

Who needs it

My Silverado is 16 years old with 218,000 miles on it. Still looks and runs great. I’ll just keep driving til the wheels fall off at this point. Also, it’s easy to work on and parts are cheap.

I stick to 'old' cars (2004 or older), because I want to work on my cars. I don't want a computer on wheels that freaks out abd shuts down if I replace the battery without reprogramming the damn computer.

Always follow the OEM maintenance recommendations FOR TOWING AND ROUGH SERVICE even if you don't do either. Also always use synthetic, top shelf lubricants and the best filters. Then change out the filter alone, topping off any lubricants, half way through the full change out time.

Take care of rubber seals and such things with a quick spray of silicone to protect against breakdown.

Get a power washer and do up the undercarriage when you can when the road salt season has ended.

Stop driving like a drunken figure-8 race driver trying to get to the drag strip start line.

$50,000 for a new, basically equipped truck. $80,000 to replace my 2008 Suburban? No thanks, I will keep driving it as long as it lasts.
