Still I fully realize how hard it would be to completely supply all the food you and your family needs. We're all used to going to the store and buying anything we need whenever we want. The fact is the whole world is having weather problems, which is hurting crop production everywhere. It might seem like there's a lot of people out there prepping when you're on this site. But the fact is prepared self sufficient people are the extreme minority. Most people in this country are totally dependent on the just in time delivery system. I'm in a rural low income area, and I can drive past dozens of homes and only see a garden every once in a while. The truth is there's a lot of people who should be trying to garden and raise their own food, but they're too lazy to bother. They'd rather use their ebt cards and get free food from the store. I'm not knocking those that use their food assistance money responsibly, but there are an awful lot who seem to feel entitled. Most people barely have a few days worth of food in their homes, and it's because they are used to running to the store or going out to eat. If anything happens to disrupt our food supply, or even if it just becomes super expensive all hell is going to break loose I guarantee it! People who do nothing, because they don't think anything bad could happen in this country are taking a huge gamble, and they don't even realize it. |

The Chinese are desperate for food- their population growth is out of control and they are at a loss to feed their own people. Russia has offered them a great deal of rich soil acreage on which to grow food for their nation, and the Chinese are busy doing so. China has money, but no food. Now they are buying our farms, and you know where that food will go. Thus we lose again, losing the crops that had always been grown on those farmlands for us, for the USA. Our farmers are tired. They've been through other floods, though not this bad, and through low prices for their produce, and so many harsh attacks on their way of life that they are giving up, giving in. We've been mollycoddled in the area of food supply for a great many years, and now we will have to face up to the change, that we have to grow a good deal of our own, and we will have to do without some of the items we have considered staples. This is actually a good thing in the long run, if people enter the harsh conditions with at least a year or two of food put away, and a great many heirloom seeds, and have asked questions and researched among good gardeners, experienced gardeners, information all over the internet as well as in their own neighborhoods. Many will not have ground to grow in - this is a problem, as it is for me, so we have to make do. Try to get to a rural area. That location will be best for any sort of SHTF situation, and especially for enough room for planting, chickens, etc. Those who remain in cities will have the hardest time of all, from food to water to security to disease infestation.For these I recommend finding relatives, friends, associates, who might assist - perhaps they could supply the heirloom seeds to such associates and friends and relatives, and go to the location whenever possible to help with the labor. That might work. However, now would be the time to set up such an arrangement, NOT AFTER SHTF!!! If we work hard at it, we can grow our own healthy food, and not have GMOs in our bodies making us ill. In that way, it would be worth it, right? Worth having to grow, to make arrangements to share space and labor, to do whatever we have to do in order to survive and survive well. Bargain shopping is the only way to go - yet people today seem to think their time is too valuable to do so. In June I told about getting actual pounds of bacon at a funky little store at the beach for $2 each. Today I stopped there again, needing more marrow bones for my girls, and that bacon had gone up fifty cents. However, they had three pound packages of bacon ends and pieces, of which I am very fond, for $5! These are always high-quality bacon, and the larger pieces are heavenly for split pea soup. In the little town out there, today pork ribs were on sale for $1.49 per pound, and I bought a family pack with eight thick meaty ribs for $5.62. That's four meals, very very nice meals, for a bargain price. A person just has to look, and think, and compare. Doesn't take all that long and when you find a bargain, grab it! The chicken a couple days ago and now these ribs - whereas I haven't purchased meat in some time, but it will be so heavenly knowing it's all in the freezer, when beans and rice are tiresome! It's true, Cyberpunk, that if one shops wisely, then looks at pantry and freezer, suddenly it seems there are riches of food! And it came so easily! We just have to be thoughtful, careful, and think outside the box. Foods at the beach should be and generally are considerably more expensive than in town, but taking care to look, I made out very nicely! I'd like to find a place such as a feed store to get a large bag or two of wheat, and I was just reading in another thread about doing so - someone gets all their grains at the feed store, which would be far cheaper. Glad you have those discounts, my friend! Every bit helps and I feel sure you will eat well, and so will your grandchildren as they grow up! I'm a long, long way from that - I don't have even a year's worth yet, much less the two that I believe is the minimum we should have today, but a little at a time . . .
