I just watched a piece on France24 discussing a lack of food for animals and the poor corn growth resulting from drought.

No animal food means no meat soon (or very little) :(

It will run out eventually, but we will have lovely peanut butter memories from it!

------------

That reminded me of a lovely peanut butter memory banana2

My mom would toast a bunch of bread, lay it on a cookie sheet...put PB and J on each one & toss it in the oven until bubbely. Serve them to us open-faced.

They were so good that many times I couldn't wait & burned the roof of my mouth!

MMMMMM! LOVELY peanut butter memories! :)

Yes, exactly. Purchase and store what you can now, bearing in mind that you will be doing a lot of rapid cooking if the grid goes down.

I suggest we all start thinking about making pemmican - this would preserve our meat and provide food we will certainly need. Also, pemmican frequently includes berries, and this is definitely the time of year to acquire berries, for eating, for drying, for pemmican.

I agree with you in regard to Long Term food storage being more expensive, And people should first secure a several month supply of what they eat, and meal extenders like oats grains rice and beans.
many store bought items will stay good for a year or two maybe more.
Over the years as I rotate I have increased my long term to include the basics as a 25 year shelf life in the long run is cheaper, Less waste.
Bugge rice or moldy grain, Year or two old 5 gal plastic bottles of cooking oil bottoms rotted out, ect.

As my father grew up in rural PA 640 acre family farm for storing food was a necessity that he continued throughout his life, I started this prepping life style many decades ago from birth, Most of my original purchases of long term are still viable for at least several more years, and I have bought replacements increased my supply within my budget over time and shop for deals.
I now spend the most on my backyard farm and garden, as my food insurance is secured.

Don't think I will be around as long as my storage will be. But my kids and grandkids will, I hope they keep it up as the knowledge i have passed down is quite useful. My 3 yr old granddaughter loves being in the dirt , The rabbits are her babies when young, And she already knows they are food but she enjoys the young ones for a while. We all enjoy the yard of bountiful gifts of the seasons and from GOD.

Thank you, Sandman1, for this post. So glad you grew up knowing the right things to do for your family! Now you have continued preparing and leaving what your children and grandchildren will need, as well as teaching even the youngest to enjoy gardening and producing. Well done!

Made it to the discount grocery today, and fortunately they are well-stocked with whatever they have. I didn't think to check if they have any packaged potato products like instant mashed potatoes - and I am fascinated by their lack in all the Walmarts we are hearing about.

What do you people think is the reason for all potato products being purchased?

This grocery has been having great sales on chicken parts - I've repackaged and put away two large pkgs of skinless, boneless chicken breasts, and today bought chicken drumsticks for .99 per lb. $3.88 for seven meals. Should have gotten a second package!

People, keep checking stores and telling us what you find, and what you do not find.
 Quoting: Pooka

I went to my local Walmart last week - shortage signs on canned goods.

I went to my local ALDI's today, PACKED and canned veggies on sale for 48 cents a can.

I checked the wheat crop futures report, things look ok for wheat, crop on schedule with low rates of disease.

Haven't checked corn yet, most states still reporting 3 weeks behind.

Canned veggies are not on my prep list.

Space is limited and canned veggies don't have enough bulk or fat or calories.

About the closest I get is campbells chunky soup or beef stew. ..but for efficient use of space I would rather store peanutbutter, spam, and corned beef hash.
 Quoting: Mental Case

Good sense and well done. Those Tamales in a can are great too. Of course tons of canned beef, chicken, turkey, pork, bacon, salmon, sardines, quality tuna, kippers, and corned beef.

Costco is selling a dried egg now that is worthy of storage.

My vegetable collection is limited to dehydrated in long term storage for soups. Lots of dehydrated onions.

Does peanut butter have a decent shelf life? I think I read somewhere that the oils will make it go rancid?
 Quoting: KTee

I have plastic jars of Skippy and Jif from 1995 that are in great shape. I still open them and try them out as the years go by. I promise you they will last for many years. I still buy new as I add to my preps. Peanut butter is a great survival commodity. I do rotate them out in the winter to treat the birds. They love it too.

corn production for this year is expected to be down about 35%.

A large percentage of corn is for the production of ethanol in gasoline. No doubt that the rise in corn prices will effect beef/chicken prices in the year to come. Maybe meat/eggs/milk could see a jump of 20% or so.

Wonderful post! No doubt cheaper to make oneself, as well. Only thing I wonder is if freezing is worthwhile, considering the government is deliberately practicing grid-down scenarios here and there and we may have to expect a total grid down at some point. In that case, pre-canned items will be best.

Grow your own or rely on others and starve. No reason for moaning and complaining.

Growing food is very easy really. Whats wrong with you all?

Seeds are cheap and land covers a third of the planet. Stop being lazy. You don't have to buy any land. Just find some and plant seeds. If its quite hidden, you have no issues. If not, most people wont know whats growing anyway. People in the US especially, don't have a clue.

Get growing , its not rocket science. Most countries outside the US it is normal. In the US people get into trouble for growing veg in their own gardens....land of the free my arse. Unheard of in every other country on earth. Nobody would tolerate that BS. WHat a fucking joke that place is.

milk. no change. I was stupid to lump that in. I guess it's the milk/eggs correlation in my head. Milk cows are not fed corn. (at least from my experience in small dairies)

We have found, through poster research in other threads on this subject, that it is not just Walmart showing such shortages, but other stores as well.

Hard to say if a lot of it is being purchased by the government - we are not supposed to know a tenth of what is really going on in any sector.
