Re: I ADVISE YOU TO CLICK THIS! It has begun. FOOD SHORTAGES.
Did the first part of my grocery shopping today. Studied the aisles when I was there.
I'm in West Central Florida and shop at Sav a Lot.
Most of my grocery list I was able to complete. Instead of just picking up a few cans here and there I went ahead and bought the whole plat. Mainly 12 cans to a flat.
Was really pleased that their creamed soups were on sale at .49 a can. Bought a full plat(mushroom and chicken) of those as well.
They had plenty of instant potatoes and their brand of stuffing.
Was able to stock up on pasta however there wasn't any macaroni noodles :( Rigatoni,Penne and Bowties will have to do for now. It's ok cause I make a lot of soup :)

I will do the same thing on the 25th. My bedroom is now beginning to look like a storage shed. LOL
I guess their shipment had just come in cause I had to ask if there were peas and the attendant said yes and she went to the back and brought me out one flat of them.
They were completely out of whole milk (Never saw that before)

I have a favorite meat store I go to for bulk goods and they were out of frozen veggie medley mix.Said their supplier was unable to fill the order due to the Ft Lauderdale water pipe bust. Was told they should have more in a couple of weeks???

I'll give another report on the 25th. Might broaden my area and go to Winn Dixie or Publix. Wish I had a Costco or Sam's Club card.

Sorry but it annoys me that a society would happily accept being told what they can and cannot grow in their own gardens. I hope you can understand how insane that is for the rest of the planet to comprehend. I don't mean to be insulting, just telling it the way it is. Sorry if you took offence.

I can see where you're coming from. A lot of people tend to spread disinformation about what you need to grow food. My friend grows a crazy amount of food on less than 1/4 acre with her gardens and meat rabbits. Although she is not self sufficient she does A LOT on very little. Most say it's not enough land but she supplies well over half her own food and still has more yard left to convert to garden space.

You should hang out with her more!
Doing the same on 1 acre with crazy high water costs So Cal Libs be taxing me out of here. My zoning is unlimited agriculture, but i cant afford water for grass forget about crops.
We also do the thumper thing and chickens.
It does cost more than store bought mass farmed produce, meat and eggs even more than "organic free range non anti bionic ect".

The lessons learned are priceless!
I only keep enough to have the option of expanding!

Folks talking about water for gardens, etc., might be interested in what we did here yesterday... I designed and built a Wirtz spiral pump using only parts from the hardware store... we launched it yesterday. It is in our little river right now, moving 20 gallons an hour over 450 feet from the river to our home. We shot video of the launch: [youtube] [link to youtu.be (secure)]

... I was so excited to see this thing work so well. We will use the water for cooling, for animals, and for the garden. No more paying for outside water!

Sad that water costs you so much! Can you do a cachement system off your roof during rains? That would help you a great deal. What plan have you for water storage for when SHTF? Have you planned for this?

Absolutely amazing! Your ability to conceive and manufacture such a thing is a gift to the world! Thank you very much for bringing this idea to us - I hope it helps many who have such a water source nearby. Thank you a milliion times over, and may it assist that many people in providing a cost-free source of life-giving water!

I wouldn't of thought it all that strange but the meat store that normally carries it was out as well.
I have a few more stores in my area that I can check for milk, just didn't do it on this run cause I had some fridge goods that needed to get home and no time.

I agree, she has alot to teach and I always try to learn. She's been gardening over 40 years. I also garden but it's pretty basic since I'm just learning.

That's too bad on your expensive water. Have you tried mulching heavy for your water Shortage and not using raised beds (just in the ground, traditional beds)? Wood chips work great. I also agree that it's more expensive to raise your food vs buying from the store, but I love knowing where my foods came from.

Neat on the sprouts, do you have a problem with mold? I can sprout barley in winter, but summer doesn't work for me. I keep it too warm in my house and it always molds.

May I ask what an average water bill runs in Cali? I am on well water so it's cheap here.

This may seem a bit off topic but I thought I would toss it out there...

I was looking for the best woods to make a bow drill from for starting a fire & found...

dry yucca stalks, cottonwood, cedar, aspen, willow. and basswood.

The best is soft, non-resinous wood...so pine wont work.

I am on 1 acre its a big house with 2 guest houses and 4 adults and 1 grand daughter.

Thanks for sharing. I'm not trying to sound insulting, California is beautiful - but that is crazy expensive! Do you ever want to move?

You grow your sprouts right on the coconut coir? It doesn't get tangled in it or is it easy to pull off? Do you re-use it for several sprouts/trays? I'll pick some up and see if it helps for my molding issues.

Re: I ADVISE YOU TO CLICK THIS! It has begun. FOOD SHORTAGES.

-------------

The reason I was thinking this is to make a LARGE bow drill set to leave next to my fire place...near the poker & tongs etc.

No matter how many lighters and matches I have...they will run out eventually.

Might as well make it easy on myself.

Let's get planting for fall crops!! And go see what heirloom seeds are available in your local stores. Today I found vegetables I could not find earlier in the season, and bought ten packages!

Beware is right, KTee - anybody not yet paying attention is so far behind the power curve they would have an awful time trying to catch up.

On another forum, people are comparing photos of shops and shelves, and more are committing to check stores in their areas. I wish more would join us doing so here, but somebody pops up a thread every now and again, and the newer threads get more posts.

Thank you for this story. Just think - people will now be facing school clothing and study materials, and that's where the money for the average and low incomes will go. Then by mid-September, when they've been able to catch their breath after being ready for school start, they may start to think about food and winter and what to stock. I fear for them - what will be still in the stores by mid-September? We can only hope that there is enough for them to fill the larder before the true cold weather hits and the stores go empty, or the balloon goes up.

I would not want to be waiting so long.

Did some shopping last evening at a local not-Walmart store. People must be buying the crap out of spaghetti noodles because there weren't any, either the Barilla brand or the local store brand. Got some fettuccine and linguini though. Loves me some fettuccine.

That is good news for you.
IMO tho if what I have read is that we are using up last years reserves then the farm rich areas will be the last to feel the effects. The costs to deliver to local areas is where they are saving their money. If that makes sense. Just a thought~

Even us in farm states are seeing weird shortages, as I said in an earlier post, spaghetti noodles have become a short commodity. Never in my life did I think spaghetti would be something that I saw in short supply. Yeah, I read fiction but that's fiction. Now we are talking real life stuff.
