I buy extra when it’s low - toss a couple in the freezer for baking at holidays

You can just toss the pound with 4 sticks in freezer just like that!

It’s good a year later if you don’t get frost from freeze and thaw

That is actually what I set out to do this morning Pooka.

Add some crisco to tops of candles & melt it...that's when I found out frozen candles doen't stay lit for long :)

There is corn that takes 90 days to maturity & corn that takes 120 days. Some varieties of tomatoes start producing early.

I think you just need to be able to plan for it.

Ya know...it wouldn't be a bad idea to have contingency plans for a short growing season, a wet season, a dry season, a hot or cold season...and have plans on what to plant for each.

Greens do well, and crucivars, such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. Mix radish seeds sparingly with lettuce seeds before planting. Radishes pop up quickly and help the lettuce break through. Sweet peas often are fast, as are some green beans.

Always use heirloom seeds, and experiment for your area. Unfortunately, now every year is going to be different, so what works one year may not the next, but perhaps vice versa and will grow magnificently. We are all going to have to go on the experimental rampage to see what will work.

Anybody with space really needs to have a green house, for sure! Unfortunately where I am the wind would take it out almost immediately. Thus, I retreat to the garage and a light over buckets.

Greenhouses come in every size - go for the largest your space and wallet will allow. Preferably where nobody can see it - you don't want to advertise what you have if you can help it. Scarecrows won't get rid of that kind of thief.

Just a thought...you could build a movable 2 foot tall greenhouse out of PVC pipe and plastic sheeting.

By the time the plants are 2 feet tall it will be warm enough to remove the green house.

Place your bag of rice in freezer for 3 days. This will kill anything in it like eggs, larva etc.

Before canning bring it out to come up to room temp.

Qt sealers hold 4c of dry rice.

Wash them very good inside with hot water and a brush.

Screw the rings on them lightly, do NOT put on the lid.

Put them in oven on 230F for one hour.

Have rice ready and add it to the sealers almost to the top.

Put the rings on and a new lid, leave things LOOSE.

Put them into the oven on 200F and leave in for 45 mins.

Bring them out and screw the lids down tightly.

Set them on a table with 9-12 inches between them.

When the lids SNAP, they are good now to store.

This now will last much longer than the 24 months that rice will last in those bags they come in.

You need one cup dry per day per person.

So for two people you need 700 cups of dry rice.

That is 175 qrt sealers.

You can find the jars used on net in your are for 10c a unit.

Just my opinion - I would buy the smallest greenhouse or do cold frames. I made the mistake years ago of buying the largest greenhouse. It was really hard to heat and expensive. I also learned the hard way that my family did not like the taste of greenhouse veggies so we started doing cold frames that we can remove on warmer days. If mulched heavily in the cold frame it also generates a lot of its own heat to keep deep freezes away with no supplemental electricity (ie, off grid heating). I still have a tiny green house, but just for starting crops to transplant for the spring.
