3. Light. LED lamps and flashlights are crazy cheap. Get twice as many as you think you need,

----------

You can tape a stick or pencil to a flashlight...put a paper plate on the end of the stick (as a lamp shade) and the flashlight works as a lamp.

I figured this out while camping one time where I needed a lamp but only had a flashlight :)

Canned veggies are not on my prep list.

Space is limited and canned veggies don't have enough bulk or fat or calories.

About the closest I get is campbells chunky soup or beef stew. ..but for efficient use of space I would rather store peanutbutter, spam, and corned beef hash.

It might if it's opened...I had an unopened jar of skippy that was 5 years beyond the expiration date and it was perfect! It was like brand new.

Probably took me 2-3 months to eat the whole jar & it was still good.

A more natural peanutbutter (where the oils separate and you have to stir it) probably doesn't have a long shelf life...but skippy or jif sure does.

Think of the space used...a veggie can filled with PB could keep you going for a week under extreme circumstances.

Don't forget crackers :)

Re: I ADVISE YOU TO CLICK THIS! It has begun. FOOD SHORTAGES.
A few thoughts from a lifelong prepper:

1. Eat what you store, store what you eat.

Be SURE that your gut is ok with the food you are storing. If this means doubling up on whatever canned / processed / packaged food you ALREADY eat, so be it. Most packaged food is good long after the expiration date... that date is more for profits and lawyers than anything else.

2. Have an ample supply of disposable plates and utensils. If things go sideways, scraping crusty food off of plates with precious water will be a bitch. Paper and foam plates and bowls are cheap. Get them now.

3. Light. LED lamps and flashlights are crazy cheap. Get twice as many as you think you need, and then double it. Darkness breeds depression, and stops nighttime productivity, reading, and social interaction. Very important.

4. Water, water, water. Did I say water? Not the 24-pack cases of bottled water, although those can be useful... I am talking about a way to store many hundreds of gallons. You will not believe how precious it is until it is measured by the ounce. Rainwater collection is brilliant if you can do it. 275 gallon totes ($50 on craigslist) are awesome. A manual pump to pull water from your well is a lifesaver. If you have a spring, river, pond, lake, whatever... think NOW about how you would retrieve and filter that water.

5. Security. Light, communication, and defense. SIMPLE FACT: if you thought ahead, and have preps, there is a literal walking army heading your way that wants to take it. Do NOT show light at night. Do NOT run a noisy generator. Do NOT let delicious cooking smells waft on the breeze unless you have perimeter security.

6. Blankets and nails. Yup. Covers windows to insulate from heat / cold and also provides light discipline.

7. Medical. Get basic first aid kits, and supplement with steri-strips, neosporin, quickclot, and shemags. Do not buy advanced medical stuff unless you know how to use it.
 Quoting: Azaziah

Azaziah - thank you for this wonderful post! You are so right about all of it - and we need to act upon your recommendations.

Your advice about water echoes my own, given time after time though I'm not sure anyone has heeded it. Get every bit of water you believe you will need, and then get four times that much. If you will do this, you will wish you had more, but you might survive with what you have. One gallon per day per person is just silly. Hygiene has to be considered, as lack of hygiene will encourage infections in the tiniest, unlikeliest wounds - even a hangnail - and you could die very quickly of sepsis, just because you were dirty! You will need to do laundry, wash the few dishes that are not disposable, drink, cook, bathe children, so many things for which there is no substitute. Get water, and get a lot and get it now!

Lights. Crazy cheap RIGHT NOW = not tomorrow or next week or after the balloon drops. Batteries and lights will be gone, or the price will be beyond reach of most people. You will so terribly regret not having stocked a great many lights - and it could be life-threatening in some situations not to be able to light the issue.

Totally agree about an enhanced first aid kit. I actually purchased a "complete" first aid kit, the kind in the little red box. Then I started looking at the contents and began to laugh. So, I went to my favorite thrift store and bought a plastic box, good-sized, and began to stock it. Now it is clear full of everything I could think of and then some. I even included a box of tampax for inserting into bullet wounds - something I hope will never be necessary. Scissors, tapes, sterile gauze pads, other bandages, cold packs, ibuprofen, so many things I cannot recall them all. It is stuffed full. Oh - gloves, as well, for keeping wounds safe and all that. This is in my vehicle now, ready for use if we have to leave home, and easily accessible for use here.

One more thing - if you expect to survive on MREs, and I hope you do not, be sure to have preparations or foods on hand to combat constipation, as that will be the result of MREs as a diet. Better have good vitamin tablets, as well, though that advice is for all of us, whether MRE eaters or no.

Thank you again, Azaziah - you are right on in everything! Please keep posting your advice.

Pooka, the biosphere is in rapid meltdown. Soon, growing for virtually anyone will cease.

Those stating that we're in the midst of the sixth mass extinction, or are only entering an ice age, etcettera, are watering down our predicament.

Do what you can, while you can, however, not long.

Venus, here we come.
 Quoting: Mr. Benton 77507190

Mr. Benton, you may well be correct. I wouldn't be surprised at all. However, we must do everything we can for the time being. We have to prepare to survive, whether we will be remaining here or taking off on a space ship later.

We have to grow all we can, while we can, to avoid starvation and to enhance the nutritional content of our diets, whatever we may have stored for future use.

Let's all plan to survive, and work quickly at acquiring everything that is going to require. Buy heirloom seeds so that if you can grow something, you are prepared to do so. Learn how to grow in your area - talk to old-timers who have gardens to find out what's best there - when to plant and what to plant at those times, how the soil is, everything you can learn, learn now.

My friend who has had the prepper mindset since age nine and has worked at it all these years and knows more than most of us ever will says from the LDS are the very best prices available. He had been unable to make that webpage open for months, until I brought it up last night and we found a way for him to get there. He has purchased from their warehouse in the past, even doing some of the canning himself.

Of course the price of pasta is far cheaper than LDS when we can find it on sale, but LDS has it packaged for long storage. Frankly, I don't think we need long storage - but that's my own mindset - I think we are in big trouble now, and will be using our preps by this winter.

Meanwhile, well done, Mental Case - terrific sale. Also consider adding the suggestions from Sandman1. I keep repeating - anything we have under our roofs grows in value daily, and guarantees that if we guard it as necessary, we will enjoy the fruits of our prepping labor and be so very thankful for every single purchase we have made.

Excellent protein, and a good fat which we will certainly need for health. I think, and I'm no doubt entirely prejudiced on the subject, that we all ought to have lots and lots of PB on hand.

Did you know that when you are working hard and wearing out, a big spoon of PB, held in your mouth and swallowed slowly, will revive your body and help you continue to finish the job you are on? Peanut butter has great reviving properties - almost medicinal!

Just between you and me, a combination of some chocolate chips with that spoon of peanut butter, melting together in the mouth and swallowed slowly, will revive your smile, your attitude, and your body - all three!

LONG LIVE PEANUT BUTTER!!!!

I'm so sorry, AC1530, to have to agree with you. We are in deep trouble and very nearly at the end of being able to shop for any preps at all. So many people don't get it - don't understand all the issues we face this very day - war, lack of foods, disease, grid down, bank closures - and that's only part of it!

Thank you, AC. Please give us your best advice for the current situation and let's have your voice in here, too.

I agree with you in regard to Long Term food storage being more expensive, And people should first secure a several month supply of what they eat, and meal extenders like oats grains rice and beans.
many store bought items will stay good for a year or two maybe more.
Over the years as I rotate I have increased my long term to include the basics as a 25 year shelf life in the long run is cheaper, Less waste.
Bugge rice or moldy grain, Year or two old 5 gal plastic bottles of cooking oil bottoms rotted out, ect.

As my father grew up in rural PA 640 acre family farm for storing food was a necessity that he continued throughout his life, I started this prepping life style many decades ago from birth, Most of my original purchases of long term are still viable for at least several more years, and I have bought replacements increased my supply within my budget over time and shop for deals.
I now spend the most on my backyard farm and garden, as my food insurance is secured.

Don't think I will be around as long as my storage will be. But my kids and grandkids will, I hope they keep it up as the knowledge i have passed down is quite useful. My 3 yr old granddaughter loves being in the dirt , The rabbits are her babies when young, And she already knows they are food but she enjoys the young ones for a while. We all enjoy the yard of bountiful gifts of the seasons and from GOD.

You'd be surprised how much organic you can buy at half price (check the dates!) because people don't recognize the difference, say, in certain small towns with large Krogers. Organic to begin with is more expensive, so they never latch onto it, thinking it's not needed.

Yeah, nine jars of organic peanut butter two months ago at half price. Still, a few pennies more than the Kroger brand - the one that had only salt and only peanuts. That was a label search because I didn't want sugar and soybean oil in the PB. Good for the next nine months and we use it also in dressings and marinades besides toast, bagels and sandwiches.

Buy flour and immediately put it in a glass jar with a lid. Flour will collect weevils if not tightly secured. Glass jars with lids - store stuff in those. The moment we open a bag of chips, the rest goes in a large glass jar and they stay much, much fresher. I've never had a problem with dented cans, and I check them carefully upon opening.

Canned veggies are not on my prep list.

Space is limited and canned veggies don't have enough bulk or fat or calories.

About the closest I get is campbells chunky soup or beef stew. ..but for efficient use of space I would rather store peanutbutter, spam, and corned beef hash.

Does peanut butter have a decent shelf life? I think I read somewhere that the oils will make it go rancid?

And be sure to check out powdered peanut butter at wally world and other stores.

I just watched a piece on France24 discussing a lack of food for animals and the poor corn growth resulting from drought.
