To add your recommendation, here is what I posted to help out friends and family on Facebook. I live in The hot zone for the California quakes, so definitely always have these things on my mind when this happens..

Be prepared for the possibility that the 6.4 in southern California was a precursor to a much larger earthquake. Check your preps, you will need methods of sanitation, food prep, and lots of water, not to mention paper goods. Remember that the minute an earthquake hit, you want to run and fill the tub with water as fast as you can before the water supply becomes tainted. Water mains made break and water sanitation can break down quickly. This extra water can be a lifesaver for bathing and washing things, and even drinking in an emergency. I myself have a portable bottle with a filter built-in for turning any water into drinkable water. Make sure you don't have heavy furniture ready ready to fall on people. If you have any glass items that would shake and fall off a counter you might want to secure them. Stock up on water and emergency supplies and medications. Be prepared to do the drop-down next to your bed into the space technique to save yourself, if it happens while you're sleeping. Make sure you have some heavy gloves in case you have to dig people out of buildings, and keep some good solid shoes in your trunk of your car and some extra water in case it happens while you are away from home. Also a jacket and a blanket is a good idea for night time. You could be anywhere doing anything when it hits. Fortunately, quakes often seem to hit in the morning/daytime, for some reason. So there's a better chance you will be aware when it hits. if you have large furniture you can buy straps at home Depot that are earthquake straps and bolted to the wall so that bookshelves and things don't tip over and crush people or block your exit. Also, be aware that the covers will fly open and all the dishes and canned goods could end up in a huge disaster on your kitchen floor. Might want to secure them with wide masking tape for a few days, if you don't have latches. A good solid tent is it also a good idea because shelter may not be available if your home has been damaged, or the apartment building has collapsed. Unfortunately, fires also happen, and it is good to know how to turn off the gas main and have a small fire extinguisher available. In an emergency, you can also put out a fire with salt, but you'd have to have a lot of it.
