That drill will require at least 5 hp (air compressor) to provide 90lb @17 so figure $750 to 1000. Remember, this is for the shell only and not any inside construction. I would probably just go with 2x4 construction and plywood that you can haul to your site. It's not that hard. Maybe build a workshop(with shower, toilet and kitchen) and use part of that for living until you can do better. It turned out pretty good for our first conversion. But it was lots of work. Last Edited by Wild Edibles…… on 07/06/2019 02:20 PM Learn something new each day,,,, And love your country!!! FJB |

boo radley User ID: 75259476 United States 07/06/2019 03:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thinking of drilling my own as well, but in the meantime, gonna install a 750 gallon water tank. However, i like the method that goes something like this: use 6" pvc casing, (drill a series of holes in the casing pipes to allow veins and water channels that are likely to be present, fill the well, along with the deep water. ) not required but food for thought. Have a 4 ' long, 4 " diameter black steel pipe sharpened on one end, with a flapper/check valve 4-6" up inside to trap dirt, sand, rock as you pull up. Attach a welded handle to the top of the pipe, inside the pipe. Attach a rope, and raise/ lower with a large pulley.(roofing suppliers carry them.) Now, you can raise and let gravity slam into the ground below. Its suggested that 4-5' drops are enough to chink the sand dirt rocks below. Having a pulley above also provides a gauge to show the vertical plumb of your casing. |

Are you planning on just putting these structures down and hoping none of your neighbors see the structure and report you to the county? I think the only way around spending 10 to 20 thousand dollars on building permits is to have the structure on wheels or a trailer, like a tiny home. But even this, in some counties has reatrictions. |

It looks easy to assemble. I’m all about easy. What do y’all think about it I have a quonset hut cabin at my ranch, which is remote. I bought it because I didn't want to spend a lot of $$ and have a lot of usable space inside. I have a 34 x 35 foot Q type quonset hut. It's a metal building, but I added a lot of insulation. I wanted metal because it's relatively fire resistant. It's still boiling hot inside in the summer, the metal conducts the heat right in, even with the insulation. It doesn't get that cold where we are, but a wood stove can keep up if you keep it stoked. The problem with these arch cabins is they are not square. The reason most homes are square is you get the full usable cubic feet from every foot of floor space. An arch is strong, for sure, but I lose at least 4 feet on each side of my building. It's good usable space, but the heat is really the big bummer. The plus is there are no internal supports, so it feels really open and airy. If you want a small cabin, and want to build it yourself, I think your best bet will be do use 2 x 6 inch studs on the exterior walls, fill it with high quality insulation and frame it up. Dry wall will go on fast and with an arch roof, you are going to have some challenges... ;) When you are afraid of losing your life, you have already lost your life. Don't be afraid. |

Not fond of Bezos, but he's got cabins to sell. [link to www.amazon.com (secure)] As has been mentioned, it's not really as easy as it sounds. Foundation, plumbing, electrical...it adds up and is a lot more work. And really, no matter which way you go, check into the permit thing just to be safe. Some counties can get pretty uppity about that. |
Crypto-Tard User ID: 77372940 United States 07/07/2019 11:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I wouldn't use a shipping container. I have 14 of them, a number have been insulated and had sliding glass doors added. If you want something solid, build an ICF (insulated concrete form) house. Super solid, you build the walls like legos, add rebar and then pour concrete. The roof can also be thick insulation and poured concrete deck roof, too. When you are afraid of losing your life, you have already lost your life. Don't be afraid. |
