Houston NWS

Most tropical model guidance pull Barry north Friday night into Saturday making landfall in Louisiana. This looks to be the most likely scenario and limits the impacts to SE Texas.

City is broke and dysfunctional.

Efforts by government - at all levels - to help during Katrina went horribly wrong. Now, everyone is on their own.

Look how little footage or follow up post Harvey, Florence and Michael. Those areas are still recovering or devastated. Suicide rate around Panama City and South Georgia has spiked.

Government will no longer really help wirh prep or eva c or clean up.

Is there even a FEMA director or is it yet another "acting position?

I mean, look how little pics or info out of California following 2 large quakes.

This is a "Sleeper" storm. No one is paying much attention to it because there aren't "severe" winds. But the wind is not the issue here: Storm surge is the issue.

A Tropical Storm or Category 1 hurricane will only push a storm surge of about 4 to 6 feet. Most folks know that (under normal circumstances) that isn't a lot and won't so much damage except to low-lying coastal areas.

But THIS year, the Mississippi River is 16 feet above sea level due to the almost constant rains deluging the midwest.

The levees and sea walls along northern New Orleans are - at max -- only 20 feet above sea level.

Do the math.

If the river is already at 16 feet, and a small Hurricane comes in with a 5 foot storm surge, ALL of the sea walls get over-topped and a trillion gallons of water pours into New Orleans.

Even worse, the Army Corps of Engineers filed notice in the federal register two years ago, that SOME of the sea walls experienced "subsidence." In layman's terms, they sank.

Some of them sank two FEET.

Bye Bye entire city of New Orleans!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77608987

When the blow up the levees again to save the rich part of the city by sacrificing the shitty parts, yes, the walls will experience "subsidence".
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77362305

New Orleans is the worst area in the state because it is bowl shaped.

Plaquemines Parish is bad because it is a peninsula and sticks out into the Gulf.

Most coastal areas are prone to flooding. It's very popular for weekenders. My opinion on that is if you can afford a second ot third home. The rest of the state should not have to pay higher insurance premiums to cover you. I say this as someone who has had beach houses on the coast.

Other areas of the state, like those in any other state, will flood given the right (wrong) situations.

But saying that any place should be abandoned, is ,imo, wrong. Would you say that the coastal areas of Pacific bordering states should be abandoned because of earthquakes?
What about tornado prone areas or areas in other states that border rivers which have overflowed? All states have their own climatological and or geographical problems.
