Flooding and immediate loss of life is the short term doom, now thru Sunday or Monday.

Here is the long term doom. The Gulf is already struggling with a huge deoxygenated zone void of life. Bottle-nosed dolphins are dying in large numbers. Shrimp harvests are down. Toxic algae and flesh eating bacteria are growing concerns. Winter and spring floods upstream are pushing already contaminated water down stream.

If the levees are breached and there is catastrophic mixing of freshwater with saltwater, well the GOM may be fucked long term. Vast areas of farmland will be useless and the health impacts incalculable.

And none of that, NONE OF IT, even begins to address the petro-chemical plants in the region at risk due to flooding as well as 50% of all of the Gulf oil rigs at risk due to wind/surge.

The environmental risk is mind-blowing.
