Anything on the river possibly diverting down the Atchafalaya because of this storm? As I understood it this was already a dangerous possibility if upriver flooding continued.

Gov. John Bel Edwards has requested a federal emergency declaration as the Mississippi River and other waterways continue to swell. However, Sosnowski doesn't think these floods will be too much to handle for the structures unless heavy rain from a tropical disturbance were to become involved over the next few weeks.

Mayor and Governor very concerned about Mississippi at 16 and 1/2 feet and should be at 8. The Levees are not ready some neglected and they worry with logs ect , breeches within hours of storm.


best-case scenario for disaster

If the river diverts (not saying it will) it will be total disaster. It will economically wipe New Orleans off the map as it will no longer be the main shipping corridor. Additionally, the city will be wholly uninhabitable as I understand it as a river diversion will result in the aquifers being overrun with salt water. This is because the reduced flow of the Mississippi and the location of the aquifer will allow salt water to come more inland than previous. This is a lot of what ifs...

But I believe the National news is really missing the big story here. They are framing it like another Katrina where there are a WHOLE host of other issues up river now!
