It will economically wipe New Orleans off the map as it will no longer be the main shipping corridor. Additionally, the city will be wholly uninhabitable as I understand it as a river diversion will result in the aquifers being overrun with salt water. This is because the reduced flow of the Mississippi and the location of the aquifer will allow salt water to come more inland than previous. This is a lot of what ifs... They are framing it like another Katrina where there are a WHOLE host of other issues up river now! Environmental disaster. Atchafalaya Basin is a a rare ecological system found no where else on earth. The saltwater intrusion with this storm and all the saltwater/freshwater mixing will certainly be damaging for a state that is loosing acres of marshland a year.
