The River is supposed to get up to 19 feet and flood stage is 20 feet. The levees in St. Bernard are all only 20 feet. And some areas in New Orleans are at 20 feet as well, but most are higher. In contrast, the levee by my house in Jefferson Parish is 27 feet so we are well protected. This is a map of the levee heights: [link to levees.sec.usace.army.mil (secure)] Mouse over the graph. [link to fourwinds10.com] So...you've got the Mississippi River already full, a storm coming that will dump possibly 25" of rain, you have a storm surge of 3-5 feet, plus tides coming in that will back everything up...and then...that storm is going to go up the Mississippi river dumping more rain that will flow into the river causing it to rise even further. You're trusting a levy to hold up under all of that? ...assuming that it will not overtop, which I would not trust knowing what all is coming. Looking Jefferson Parish up on the map, you're living on a honeycomb. |

Evacuees should be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. - ACT: Remain sheltered in a safe location. Do not venture outside. When have they EVER told people to 'shelter in place' during a storm surge? They usually tell everyone to get the hell OUT. What is going on? |
