A bunch of idiots here that know nothing about the aviation industry.

Shit happens, it's about how the emergency is handled and the training of the flight crews. Flying is safe because it is drilled over and over again how to respond to emergencies. When shit goes wrong pilots are trained to respond in the best way possible.

How many people have died on a commercial flight in the US in the last 5 years? I believe it's like 1 or 2. There was the lady on that SW flight and maybe 1 other. There hasn't been a major crash killing all on board in the US for over a decade. The last was Colgan air in NY I believe, and that resulted in a lot of changes in the industry.

You people crying about how unsafe flying is have no clue what you're talking about.

Dramatic video footage taken by a passenger on board a Baltimore-bound flight Monday showed a loose spinner rattling in one of the engines before the plane was forced into an emergency landing.

Delta's Flight 1425 – a 32-year-old MD-88 – left Hartsfield-Jackson International Baltimore-Washington International around 12:48 Monday. About an hour into the flight, passengers said they heard a loud boom followed by smoke billowing into the cabin.

And this is why I refuse to fly. Security garbage aside, these plans are old, not very well maintained and literally falling apart.

BULLSHIT. Not well maintained? WTF are you smoking? These are the most well maintained machines in the world with the highest standards for maintenance.

Literally falling apart? How many flights are there a day? One aircraft has an emergency where a well trained crew got everyone on the ground safely and in your mind that means they're all literally falling apart? Idiot.

MD-88 is sort of an outdated aircraft.

I wouldn't care if the Airline CEO was gay or blue or pink, I would just ask for his aircraft to be properly maintained and flight deck crew to be properly trained so they will fly me from point A to point B without any incidenr.

I apologize for the link, it's merely convenient.

Deaths and incidents per year according to ACRO and Bureau of Aircraft Accident Archives data, as of 1 January 2019:

[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

239 people on MH370 alone, and a few other full planes have gone down.

Last 5 years in the US?

9, more depending upon what you want to include as "commercial".

Don't aircraft engines typically have vibration sensors that flag the engine and let maintenance know when a part is vibrating more than expected? Seems I read that in one of my trade magazines.

Compressor bearing failed, could be a defective bearing, it was installed improperly at the overhaul shop or just a high time engine and shit happens. Probably clogged the oil filter and the DPI popped and the engine shuts itself down before it shakes itself apart. MD-80 can fly easily on one engine.

Flying commercial is the safest way to travel. But they aren't infallible and maintenance shortcuts are frequently taken--even on US based airlines. Check out Southwest's NTSB fines over the past 10 years...they've paid in millions for outsourced maintenance and equipment problems.

The number of near calls is pretty staggering.

Re: Delta engine falls apart midflight before emergency landing, video at link
There need to be more aircraft manufacturers. It was better when Boeing had Lockheed and McDonnell Douglas as competitors.

I can't believe Delta is still flying a thirty year old MD-88.

When Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas, they renamed the MD-95 the Boeing 717. They cancelled those because they didn't want the competition with their 737, but the airlines actually wanted the MD-95/Boeing 717. The tail engine design isn't found on any other new commercial airliners that I know of.

Most of these "legacy" airlines should have failed and not been bailed out after 9/11. They have always been poorly managed and inefficient. It was better when there was more competition. Another case of anti-trust laws being ignored and mergers and acquisitions not being stopped.

True enough, ScrumpTheTexan, but remember that one GLP thread from months ago where it was proven that all of these major airlines outsource literally all of their aircraft maintenance to third worlders complete with cheap Chinese parts? I think we're seeing precisely what happens when these major airlines decide to seriously commit to non-American, high quality strict maintenance cycles with equally high quality parts.

Here's my airline story:

Four years ago I flew from California to New England. While stopping at Phoenix they tried to load food into the airplane. They put the food cart on a hydraulic lift but it got caught on the plane door 15 feet into the air. It bent the fucking door! The door would not shut close and the light would stay on telling the pilot one of his doors are open. We were stranded there for 5 hours. I missed my transfer flight and had to spend the night in Philly. The Knee-grow woman at the desk tried to send me to a hotel in downtown Philly at 1am in the night knowing full well I would get mugged. Luckily her friend gave me a room at the Hilton inside the airport. I would have been killed walking around Philly at that time of night. The black new that too. I don't fly anymore.
