they mess with your posture, can give you hammertoes, can destroy your heels (because your heels strike harder) and lets not even mention Plantar Fasciitis (because you grip with your toes to keep them on, which tightens the calf muscles which messes up the muscles in your feet) You can go with a pair with a thicker sole and and arch for beach/pool wear but don't wear them long term
