Modern cars are full of computers and wires and fiber optic cables. Bang it up or get it wet and it becomes practically unrepairable. It's not that it can't be fixed, it's just cheaper to replace it. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74783034 Yes. Learn how to work on your own cars and only buy used. Easy. I'm driving 12 and 18 year old vehicles that run perfect due to good maintenance. |

I was paying more than friends with full comprehensive on newer cars... Bye bye Geico... Oh and when i asked a Geico rep said it was all the new front end computer tech that cost so much to repair on others and i said why not raise THEIR rates ? It's not on my old Ford truck... |

DeplorableDoomsdayGuy User ID: 75814320 United States 07/12/2019 11:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It cost as much as a car payment or more to have auto insurance these days!!! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77589170 Its a complete ripoff! Teen drivers have it the worse! [link to www.nerdwallet.com (secure)] The national average cost of car insurance is $1,621 per year, according to NerdWallet’s 2019 rate analysis. That works out to an average car insurance rate of about $135 per month for 40-year-old drivers with good credit and no at-fault accidents on their records before any discounts are applied. This cost includes liability, comprehensive, collision and any additional state-mandated coverage types. If that is all that you pay for insurance, then you are getting off easy. Michigan probably has the highest auto insurance in the country because of Personal Injury Protection. If you get into an accident in Michigan and get into an accident where you are no longer able to work and/or seriously injured requiring lifetime care, the insurance company is on the hook for the first $300,000 of lost wages and medical care/assistance. After that, the state pays for the rest of your life. $220 goes to the state automatically to cover the expenses, for each vehicle you insure. That's on top of the PIP cost that gets paid to the insurance company to cover their costs. If I quote someone a basic 6-month liability policy, a good majority of the time the state get's almost half of the premium that gets collected. The way the program works though makes it prone to abuse. The State of Michigan does not have any fee schedule coordinated with health providers, so Dr's can basically charge the state whatever they want, and the state has to pay. I know of a couple where the wife injured her arm pretty good, supposedly she has problems doing basic household chores. Since that's due to an accident, the state will pay for someone to come and do those chores. In this case, though the husband is the caregiver there so they get the money. Even if the state stopped the program now, the state is already on the hook for millions. The whole thing is shady as fuck. Come on and take a free ride. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77259592 United States 07/12/2019 11:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Years ago (mid 1990's ?) I read an interesting article where they asked the question that insurance companies dread ... "For every dollar that you get in insurance premiums, how much do you pay out in claims? Their research showed the very best of the big insurance companies paid out about 50 cents in claims for every dollar taken in as premiums. The worst of the big insurance companies paid out 25 cents for every dollar. There should be a law forcing insurance companies to publish, once a year, their "claims paid"/"premiums received" ratio for the previous year. But of course it would be impossible to get such a law passed ... the insurance companies will donate tons of money to the politicians to stop it. We are screwed. |

It will take widescale integration of insurance companies and DMV which won't happen. Where I am it doesn't matter how good your driving record is, I have no accidents or tickets, ever. He has to pass on the prices to the customer. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77673739 CHOP SHOPS owned/run by Insurance Companies.? Much of this is caused by the gas mileage requirements required by the federal government. The cars are made increasingly lighter every year but still must pass NHSC crash tests. All of the metal is paper thin with honeycomb structure behind the body panels to absorb and disperse impact. Even a minor accident will necessitate all of this structure being torn down and replaced. Alot of labor and alot of new parts $$$$$. Plus all the glass is being made way thinner so people are having to replace windshields more than ever in the past. Idiots think they saving money on gas because it gets good mileage but the cost is just being passed on to other areas like higher insurance premium and deductible costs. So said idiots go off to blame the insurance companies for "ripping them off" when, as usual, the source of the increased cost is government regulation. |
