Mad Sow Disease

I've known 3 people who have died of CJD disease-- that's a lot for a disease that is supposedly extremely rare, and these were all Americans. One had the genetic version. He died when he was 38. His father had also died of it, as had his siblings. The other 2 I know of were both women. One raised sheep. While she and her husband were not avid hunters, she had consumed some deer and elk meat during her lifetime. She lasted 6 weeks from the time of her first noticeable symptom that something was wrong to the time it killed her. The other lady owned and operated a small dairy farm with her husband, in Michigan. They did eat deer meat, as a lot of Michigan hunters do. She lived 7 months from her first notice of a problem to death.

There is no evidence that humans can contract Chronic Wasting Disease from eating elk, deer, and moose, but there is also not conclusive evidence that they can't. The meat gets contaminated if it comes in contact with the spinal cord or brain of the animal during processing. A hunter should never touch either.

Here is where the real horror story begins though. The prions that cause Chronic Wasting Disease in animals are not destroyed when the animal dies. The body decomposes and becomes soil-- the prions go into the soil and it is known that the prions are then taken up into the grasses and other vegetation along with nutrients. Look it up-- animals eat the vegetation and those prions then pass to those animals... laying dormant for who knows how long until one day, maybe due to a stressful situation, the prions start turning the animal's brains into a sponge. With nothing destroying prions other than extremely hot temperatures (hotter than a normal crematorium) it only makes sense that a day is coming in which the exponential "population" growth curve of these prions will infect all animals that consume vegetation and then infect the animals that eat those animals-- including humans. I am a firm believer that people can contract CWD and the CDC doesn't want to scare the hell out of America.

I suspect that if the human race sticks around another 200 years, CJD could become one of the leading causes of death in wealthy countries with high meat consumption. Maybe it already is a top killer-- maybe it's usually written off as a fast-moving case of Alzheimer's. There is no way to confirm CJD in the living. It is a diagnosis only offered when absolutely every other possibility is ruled out because this diagnosis is a death sentence. It can only be confirmed in a brain biopsy so confirmation comes from testing after death and most families do not ask for that testing to happen. They just bury their Alzheimer's patient and plant those prions, or, better yet, they have them cremated in a normal crematorium and then they spread the ashes and prions in an open field. The circle of death continues.
