In the new world, chestnut was highly prized for birth and death as cradles were made from the wood of the chestnut and so was the coffins. It was the most important tree in the eastern regions when one out of four trees was a chestnut at one time. Growth rate made it fast and large becoming dominant species within the tree kingdoms. Matured, can grow for 300 years and stand 100 feet tall with more than 6 feet width in diameter.

But in 1904, a blight effected its divine right to rule the tree kingdom with dominance. A zoo of all places it was first noticed, asiatic fungus. By the 1950s, the blight took out over 200 million acres executing an estimated 4 billion chestnuts making it the worst ecological disaster within the 20th century.

The innocent import of the blight caused the first plant quarantine laws to be established.

The blight feeds on the tissue under the bark. The fungus creates cankers that break through the bark which cuts off the flow of nutrients between the leaves and roots in turn, killing the tree. The roots are unaffected meaning they can sprout shoots yet the shoots then succumb.

The restoration came in 1983, when a party of select individuals started a foundation to restore the chestnut to eastern forests. The breeding program became initiated to produce effective resistance to the blight with intention for a self sustaining population that can continue to evolve in a natural forest environment. 300 breeding orchards arose.

In 2009, restoration chestnut 1.0 was planted

The developments in molecular genetics offers accelerated programs through screening the genetic sequences finding out if they have the desired genetic composition by the scientists. The projected outcome would be decades for population reestablishing the forests.
