Re: Update Photo: Brother-in-Law Called Me Begging For Me To Fix His House!
So why didn't your sister ask you. Why did she have her stupid husband call you?

Do you wonder if he's abusive to her as well? Sabotaging things and not fixing them, mooching, claiming to be a victim, not able to maintain finances? Is there always drama in that household? If so then your sister might be in danger, because those NPDs will escalate to murder. Don't confront him, just make sure she gets out safe and has a place to stay. (they will manipulate a wife in a shitty broken house to trap her).

Otherwise, boundaries are ok. Don't feel guilty. You are allowed to say "no" to family. If they don't respect your "no" and move on then there's a problem.
 Quoting: MissCleo

I think you're on to something here. The BIL's know-it-all mocking attitude and lack of compassion for other events in OP's life are huge red flags. I didn't immediately think NPD, but now that you mention it... yes.

Best to stay away from such people.
 Quoting: Renaissance Woman

Sister in trouble!
The NPD will try to isolate her from the family, and by getting into a family argument he does just that!!!
That allows the abuser to have privacy with his victim and torture her.
Guys have bro-code so they won't question their treatment of their sister and deflect with manly stuff like fixing shit and cars and sports.

OP, talk to your sister!

Re: Update Photo: Brother-in-Law Called Me Begging For Me To Fix His House!
Short backstory: I have been doing contracting both GC, framing, and interiors for two decades. I did it while I was a paramedic and firefighter. I did it for many years after I left.

Well, my business fell off after '08 and I survived all the way until 2017. Doing all sorts of handyman work. And I did okay until an unexpected illness kicked the feet out from under me.

Well, in 2016, my brother-in-law hired a bunch of illegals to build his house. And he bragged how much cheaper they were than me, how much more efficient, how much this and that.

So, he calls me last night, hat in hand, and says, "Can you help me?" He lists of twenty problems with the homes structure and framing. It's so bad, he can't even get insured.

At first, I had a genuine surge of pity. Then I remembered him laughing about hose fast they all worked and how they didn't want a "small fortune". How my wife and I lived in the damn ghetto for two years after we lost our ranch as we save for this little farm we have now. How my son helped frame pole barns in the middle of summer so I could stay working. Of how he not once he came and saw when I got that freaking spider bite.

And with a deep breath I said, "No habla bastardo barata." I don't speak cheap bastard. Then I said, "
Auf Wiedersehen." And hung up.

It caused quite a stir between the wife, mother-in-law, and her sister. Gosh, I'd love to be a fly on the wall at church this morning.

If you cocksuckers want your cheap labor, live with the consequences. The myth of Illegals being these master carpenters is just that, a myth. Like the legendary woodworking of the Amish. It's total bullshit.

Reap it!

Sure, who wouldnt want to take on the liability of basically rebuiding a house unable to pass inspection? For an ungrateful user.

He touches one nail and he then owns every bit of that shoddy work. And guess who the asshole cheapskate BIL sues when anything else goes wrong?

OP, beyond any bad feelings...how the hell are you supposed to "fix" the problem?

It sounds like the only "fix" is a complete tear down & rebuild.

Avoid the family problems and just tell them there is nothing you can do...there is no way to "fix" the problems of a bad build.

I agree with you 110%. In an area I used to live, was semi rural until they built a gold course, now more suburban, I seen the McMansions built by illegals vs the real homes built by Whites.

The McMansion won't survive 20 years. Cheap wood spread out as much as it can, with cheap drywall and siding. The homes built by Whites? They should last over a century unless a disaster strikes. Real brickwork, real foundations, real walls, and real craftsmanship.

Internet high five my friend. Fuck these people. Using illegal labor is tantamount to sedition. I hope the horse falls on the cheap prick.

FUCK HIM! He got what he deserves. He can spend all the money he "saved" using illegals to build his house. Family is family, but he chose to screw you, and use illegal labor, so now he can live with that decision.

Good for you.

Our sons, made a pretty good 2nd income last year repairing all the roofs, "cheap help" had shingled and were bad, leaking. The boys charged way over what they would have charged in the first place to have it done right.
People don't even care anymore around here, just so it's done right the first time.
Cheap labor is pretty much out of business. finally
 Quoting: theyrcoming

By hiring these illegal aliens is totally illegal in the first which should be enforced. There are laws in place that fine these people who get caught working them and they should face criminal charges if it's habitual. It's sad to see America falling as there will be a massive backlash as the young Americans jobs are taken and we are seeing it happening now with young folks not able to even find a seasonal part time job while in school.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76312484

My short story about illegals work:

Went to my neighbors house and asked George "what happened to that nice wooden table lamp I gave you? It's covered in white paint".

He explained that his Mexican wife had some illegal friends over and they needed work. So they spray painted the bedrooms with a spray gun. Instead of cleaning out each room, removing tables and beds and lamps....they just spray painted over everything.

I like to look at vintage/antique house videos- and here is one in Australia built in 1863. It was so beautiful and in stellar condition. Developers are buying homes like this and tearing them down to make way for multi-rise apartments and other atrocious things all over the west.

Re: Update Photo: Brother-in-Law Called Me Begging For Me To Fix His House!
My experience has been the opposite. Every white hillbilly rural small business owner has screwed me, well pump contractor, tile installer, roofer. They all pull the same scam, give you an estimate, then low and behold they have to drive 50 miles each way to the major town to buy a small part, over and over again, doubling or tripling the estimated cost.

I had about 1800 feet carpeted by Home depot and they sent one Mexican guy in a small truck. Damn all by himself he got that big roll of carpet off his truck, worked his ass off and got it all done that day. Another Mexican I hired to cut a tree down that was hanging over the garage, got his spurs on, climbed the tree like a cat, tossed a rope like a rodeo expert lassoing the branches, cutting them and having them fall away from the garage. and cut the damn tree down piece by piece in about an hour. It was like watching a circus trapeze artist, seeing the way he moved up in that tree.

Like a monkey with a chainsaw. They're hard to find. My son's BIL took 3 weeks to Fall a big pine and he did nothing else. The cost was an old 70 MGB Midget , sitting in the yard rusting, and a 20" husqvarna (sp?) chainsaw. It's apparently up to me to get rid of the log.
I don't have the time or the crayons to explain this to you.

Nope. I'm not playing that Baby Boomer logic game any longer. And to anyone worried about my sister-in-law being in danger. Fuck's sake, seek help.

They are Boomers. They just want cheap and shiny. She's the exact same as my brother-in-law and my wife and I aren't going to help them.

All the touchy feelies like Cleo trying to make it about some melodrama are missing the point. If you want illegals to fuck things up because they're cheap then don't call me to fix it.

Fuck your collective couches.
